Summary The pictorial themes of the Dodekaeorton, the cycle of the Twelve Great Feasts in Byzantine church decoration, are often not arranged according to the chronology of the biblical account. Additionally, some of these pictures are arranged in an antithetical way, deliberately ignoring biblical chronology to create pairs of images. The location of these images within the church is significant, as it is linked to the theological-liturgical importance of the space. These antithetical arrangements can be explained by homiletic and liturgical texts. Furthermore, the meaning of the images often refers to theosis, the transformative process by which human beings become united with God and partake in the divine nature. While chronology plays an important role in the arrangement of the pictures, it is not decisive. Beyond theosis, an expanded idea of reception seems to underlie these programs. The viewer may have perceived the images in a more emotional and associative-spiritual way, identifying with what was depicted. Summary Nineteenth- and early twentieth-century advertisements for pianos, pianists, merchants, music publishers and, above all, for domestic purchases are full of images employed for commercial rather than cultural purposes. This volume examines the commercial characters and significances of how pianos were pictured between the early days of 'modern' marketing to today. During the early 1920s, piano sales peaked in the United States; nevertheless, pianos have continued to be sold even as radios, record players, television sets and electric keyboards increasingly replace them as must-have sources of entertainment and improvement. The market for player pianos, although comparatively short-lived, also provided manufacturers and retailers with opportunities to depict pianos and pictures. Summary This book explores the viewing and sensorial contexts in which the bodies of kings and queens were involved in the premodern societies of Europe, Asia, and Africa, relying on a methodology that aims to overcoming the traditional boundaries between material studies, art history, political theory, and Repr sentationsgeschichte. More specifically, it investigates the multiple ways in which the ruler's physical appearance was apprehended and invested with visual, metaphorical, and emotional associations, as well as the dynamics whereby such mise-en-sc ne devices either were inspired by or worked as sources of inspiration for textual and pictorial representations of royalty. The outcome is a multifaced analysis of the multiple, imaginative, and terribly ambiguous ways in which, in past societies, the notion of a God-driven, eternal, and transpersonal royal power came to be associated with the material bodies of kings and queens, and of the impressive efforts made, in different cultures, to elude the conundrum of the latter's weakness, transitoriness, and individual distinctiveness.
