In deze unieke uitgave onderzoekt Roland Tefnin de betekenis van het oog in de beeldende kunst van de Oudheid. Afhankelijk van de tijd waarin het geconcipieerd werd, neemt het gelaat andere vormen aan en krijgt de blik in de ogen nieuwe betekenissen. Tefnin laat zien dat de frontale blik enerzijds een constante betekenis heeft, terwijl zich op bepaalde belangrijke momenten opmerkelijke verschuivingen voordeden. Aan de hand van mysterieuze beelden uit het stenen tijdperk, het oude Egypte en de klassieke Griekse beschaving als ook fonkelende Byzantijnse mozaieken toont Tefnin aan wat intuitief wordt aangevoeld: in een tweedimensionaal beeld ? voor beeldhouwwerken ligt de problematiek anders ? is de blik van het kunstwerk naar buiten nooit toevallig.
