‎Zu Lebzeiten Tschudi's wurde nur eine einzige Schrift veröffentlicht. "Dieses Werk ist ein neuer Beweis der so erstaunungswürdigen Gelehrsamkeit des grossen Tschudi" (Haller). In der Tat hat Tschudi, "der Vater des Schweizergeschichte" (HBLS) für die hier vorliegende historisch-topographische Beschreibung nicht nur alle Autoren des Altertums studiert, sondern auch als erster Historiker in der Schweiz Inschriften und Münzen. Er hat mit jahrzehntelanger Ausdauer ein Urkundenmaterial zusammen getragen, für das wir ihm "noch heute dankbar sein müssen, da manche der von ihm copierten Originalien verloren sind" (Wyss). Aegiduis Tschudi lebte von 1505 bis 1575. Dieser "Haupt-Schlüssel" wurde durch den Glarner Pfarrherrn J. J. Gallati herausgegeben und betrifft inhaltlich zum grossen Teil die Schweiz. Das Werk ist nach Stichworten geordnet, durch ein Register erschlossen und liest sich wie eine Chronik. Am Anfang etwas wasserrandig und leicht stockfleckig.
