Gildepenningen bestrijken bovendien een klein en fascinerend gebied binnen de numismatiek. Ze staan vol symbolen van hun ambacht, soms ook met raadselachtige tekens. De namen of nummers die erop zijn aan te treffen, maken elke penning tot een uniek exemplaar, waarachter vaak een boeiende geschiedenis schuilt.
