‎Artist Jacquie Maria Wessels (1959) studied photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and social psychology at the Free University. Her work is related to documentary photography and is usually the result of a long-term study of a specific subject. The work presented in this book arises when Wessels discovers the wonderful universe of traditional garages: she becomes fascinated by the shapes and colors of the mysterious and unknown objects she finds there. Wessels then travels the world to create poetic still lifes in exotic garages with her analog camera. At first glance, the interiors of garages in Cambodia, Cuba, Italy, Morocco, the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey, Russia, South Africa, Japan and Sri Lanka seem to contain the same elements, but small details - only visible to a patient and trained eye - pointing out cultural differences. Wessels then points her camera outwards, towards the immediate vicinity of the old garages. There she is struck by the nature that she finds in the rough, industrial landscapes on the outskirts of the cities. In some cases, rampant nature takes over from industry, overgrowing the garages that try to survive. The photographic result is picturesque images with a surprising color palette. At the same time, they testify to a disappearing, mainly male world that is gradually being supplanted by new, sterile technologies.‎

‎Kunstenaar Jacquie Maria Wessels (1959) studeerde fotografie aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie en sociale psychologie aan de Vrije Universiteit. Haar werk is gerelateerd aan de documentairefotografie en is meestal het resultaat van een langdurige verdieping in een welbepaald onderwerp. Het werk dat in dit boek aan bod komt ontstaat wanneer Wessels het wonderlijke universum van traditionele garages ontdekt: ze raakt gefascineerd door de vormen en kleuren van de mysterieuze en onbekende voorwerpen die ze er aantreft. Wessels trekt vervolgens de wereld rond om in exotische garages po tische stillevens te cre eren met haar analoge camera. De interieurs van garages in Cambodia, Cuba, Itali , Marokko, Nederland, Polen, Turkije, Rusland, Zuid-Afrika, Japan en Sri Lanka, lijken op het eerste gezicht dezelfde elementen te bevatten, maar kleine details - enkel zichtbaar voor een geduldig en getraind oog - wijzen op culturele verschillen.
