‎Les batailles de Bataille de Coronel et de Bataille des Falklands sont deux affrontements navals majeurs du début de la Première Guerre mondiale dans l’Atlantique Sud et le Pacifique. 1. La bataille de Coronel — 1er novembre 1914 Lieu : au large des côtes du Chili, près de Coronel. L’escadre allemande de l’amiral Maximilian von Spee affronte une flotte britannique commandée par l’amiral Christopher Cradock. Les navires allemands, mieux armés et plus modernes, infligent une lourde défaite aux Britanniques. Deux croiseurs britanniques, le Good Hope et le Monmouth, sont coulés.C’est la première grande défaite navale britannique depuis plus d’un siècle. Conséquence : Le choc est immense au Royaume-Uni. Royal Navy décide d’envoyer une force beaucoup plus puissante pour détruire l’escadre allemande. 2. La bataille des Falklands — 8 décembre 1914 Lieu : près des îles Falkland (Malouines). Une escadre britannique commandée par l’amiral Frederick Doveton Sturdee attend les Allemands. Les croiseurs de bataille britanniques Invincible et Inflexible sont plus rapides et plus puissants. L’escadre de von Spee est presque entièrement détruite.Von Spee et la plupart de ses hommes meurent dans le naufrage du Scharnhorst. Conséquence : La domination navale britannique est rétablie dans l’Atlantique Sud. La menace allemande contre les routes commerciales disparaît pratiquement. Importance historique. Ces deux batailles montrent : l’importance stratégique des océans pendant la Première Guerre mondiale ; le rôle décisif de la puissance industrielle et navale britannique ; la transition vers une guerre navale moderne dominée par les grands croiseurs cuirassés et les communications mondiales.‎
