Summary The essays collected in this volume focus on the Ancient Greeks' perception of foreigners and of foreign lands as potential sources of knowledge. They aim at exploring the hypothesis that the most adventurous intellectuals saw foreign lands and foreigners as repositories of knowledge that the Greeks ????? had to engage with, in the hope of bringing back home valuables in the form of new ideas. It is a common place to state that the ?Greeks? displayed xenophobia, which is probably best exemplified in the binary and ethnocentric division of humanity in two groups: the Greek world (i.e., the hellenophones) and the others, the Barbarians - those who speak foreign languages. This attitude of insularism and defiance, however, did not hinder the curiosity of Greek and Roman societies towards strangers. Lycurgus, Pythagoras, Democritus, etc.: there is a long list of sages and philosophers who travelled around the world for a significant period of time. The Greeks had a rich and varied relationship with foreign lands and people, which made possible a real circulation of knowledge throughout the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic times; this is also true of the Roman Empire. Each of the articles included in this collective work explore one aspect of the ?stranger? as a possible source of knowledge, with contributions mostly focused on Plato, Xenophon, Democritus, Aristotle, Diogenes, Cicero and Galen. On Day 1 of the Belgian lockdown in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic Beno t van Innis made a drawing with a black felt-tip pen on an A4 sheet. He sent the drawing to some friends?most of them from the art world?by mail and WhatsApp. On Day 2 of the lockdown, he made a second drawing and again he sent it to his friends and acquaintances. The response was overwhelmingly positive. The drawings were shared on social media and dS Weekblad published an interview and five drawings. The protagonist in these drawings is the artist himself, who reacts to the exceptional situation departing from his own universe. The book Instant Light compiles the entire series of drawings Beno t made in his studio in Brussels. They feature all his favourite subjects: painting, Club Brugge, literature, the world of art and French chanson. The book is published by Posture Editions in a co-production with Be-Part Kortrijk/Waregem, Hof van Busleyden Mechelen and Berg Institute Madrid. The publication is a collection of unique drawings that constitute a personal account of this unprecedented period in our history. It?s as if these stylishly elegant and sometimes virtuoso drawings instantly brighten up this dark page; they also provide an ideal diversion from the countless bad tidings we?re confronted with every day. Beno t van Innis (b. 1960) studied painting with Dan Van Severen at Sint-Lucas in Ghent. Shortly after graduating his drawings were published in De Morgen and De Standaard der Letteren. Since 1989, he has drawn 31 covers for The New Yorker. Beno t is widely known for the eight portraits he created for the tiled walls in the Brussels metro station Maalbeek. This beautiful work of art became the setting for a terrorist attack in 2016. Released at Museum Hof van Busleyden, 2 July 2020 and Be Part Kortrijk, 5 Sep 2020

Summary In an increasingly visual age, images are the new lingua franca and Christian theology must ask how it can be 'spoken' with nuance and integrity. This book brings together theologians, biblical scholars, art historians, and curators to consider what questions about Christ and modernity might be posed by the visual arts, and what truths about Christ and modernity they might ask us to face. Its authors explore modern and contemporary artists from Pablo Picasso to Kent Monkman and Paul C zanne to Cornelia Parker, addressing questions of theory, practice, and interpretation. Their contributions are orientated by an enquiring and critical focus on how modern and contemporary visual art coexists with, counters, illuminates, and serves Christianity.
