‎On January 23-24, 2008 the University of Groningen hosted an international symposium entitled 'Understanding Art in Antwerp. Classicising the Popular, Popularising the Classic (1540-1580)', where art historians, literary historians and musicologists explored how art was understood in Antwerp in the sixteenth century, how that art understood itself and conveyed such understanding to others, and how students of early modern Antwerp should understand that concept of art historically. Attention was paid to the factors which influenced the vision of the nature and function of art, including those of a non-artistic nature. Central to the idea of art was the relationship between the classical and the popular and between various synonyms, such as the foreign and the vernacular. Antwerp artists in all fields covered by this volume participated in cultural exchange, attempting to incorporate and assimilate elements from different origins into their work. Likewise, contemporary audiences (either as spectators, readers or listeners) were challenged to follow and understand what amounted to a kind of play or playfulness that was so charcateristic of sixteenth-century culture.‎

‎Summary This volume aims at taking the first steps towards a revaluation of urban historiography in Northwest Europe, including rather than excluding texts that do not fit common definitions. It confronts examples from the Low Countries to well-studied cases abroad, in order to develop new approaches to urban historiography in general. In the authors' view, there are no fixed textual formats, social or political categories, or material forms that exclusively define 'the urban chronicle'. Koen Brams considers Cornelis? explicit strategies to bring to light differences of opinion in the art world in the year 1971. He further shows that Cornelis avails himself of less explicit methods of operation to carry his point. Dirk P ltau analyses the covert elements of the soundtrack of the film Landscape of churches. What at first hearing seems a classical sound recording turns out, on further consideration, to contain a "demonic" message. In het geval van Brussel is dat verleden even rijk als woelig: de stad was achtereenvolgens de hoofdplaats van het hertogdom Brabant, de Zeventien Provinci n, de Zuidelijke Nederlanden, het Verenigd Koninkrijk der Nederlanden, Belgi , de Vlaamse en Franse Gemeenschap en ten slotte ook de Europese Unie. We maken die historische lijn inzichtelijk, onder meer via een oud schema van de zeven geslachten die de stad bestuurden in de late middeleeuwen en een unieke plattegrond die de lezer door de straten gidst waar zich in 1830 de Belgische Revolutie voltrok. Maar de geschiedenis is meer dan een onophoudelijke politieke en militaire machtsstrijd. De zorgvuldig geselecteerde kaarten tonen ook de sociaal-economische en culturele fundamenten van Brussel, door thema's zoals religie, ontspanning, industrie en migratie te belichten. Sommige kaarten, zoals die van Jacob van Deventer, zijn iconisch geworden. Andere verwonderen, zoals een schets van de groentekramen op de Grote Markt en een mentale kaart van het hedendaagse Anderlecht. Een aantal kaarten in dit boek is nooit eerder aan het brede publiek getoond. Zo vonden we een 16de-eeuwse proceskaart die de ruzie tussen stedelingen blootlegt, en een twee meter lang plan met de posities van de Oostenrijkse legers voor het beleg van Brussel. Een team van ervaren historici en cartografen schetst de historische context en leert je hoe je de kaart kunt 'lezen' als venster op het verleden.
