Rubens may be said to have revived the genre of hunting scenes, a theme whose popularity had declined since the Middle Ages. Dr. Balis explores this updating of the genre by examining in the greatest detail Ruben?s paintings and drawings of hunting scenes and thereby throws a fascinating light on the society in which the artist lived. This volume brings the hunting scenes together for the first time in a definitve catalogue raisonne that documents both the precedents for and the originality of Rubens?s development of hunting iconography, and argues that the prolific production of Flemish animal painters in the 17th century owes its very existence to Rubens?s example and his creation of a sympathetic audience. Both text and catalogue discuss the ever-important questions of what part Rubens himself played in the execution of these sometimes huge canvases, since he seems to have relied in some degree on the assistance of his studio or of specialized animal painters. Le Paradis terrestre et l'Enfer de Dirk Bouts font l'objet d'un dernier etat de la question. De nouvelles prises de vues ont ete realisees a cette occasion et des documents techniques inedits emaillent l'abondante illustration photographique. On releve egalement l'analyse des portraits de Louis de Quarre et Barbe de Cruysinck et du Triptyque de la Vierge et l'Enfant, deux oeuvres appartenant au groupe du Maitre au feuillage en broderie, un artiste enigmatique dont la personnalite a ete recemment mise en relief par une exposition dans ce meme musee. Essays over een verhard romanticus. Nieuw.Van Leusden (1886-1974, geboren in Utrecht, als kunstenaar werkzaam in Maarssen) begon als graficus, met technieken die hij, vooral o.i.v. Hercules Seghers (17e eeuw), later nog zocht te verfijnen. Ten slotte eindigt hij als surrealist. In beide perioden maakt zijn werk een sterke indruk, al lijkt hij als schilder aarzelender dan als tekenaar en etser. Daartussen toont hij zich een rusteloze zoeker met sterk wisselende beeldtaal: symbolisme, nieuwe zakelijkheid, luminisme, geometrisch werk, kubisme, futurisme, expressionisme, architectonisch werk, constructivisme en wat niet al - hij ondergaat veler invloed; is zijn gebrek aan consistentie oorzaak van zijn betrekkelijke onbekendheid? Zijn innerlijke geremdheid leidde hem tot pessimisme en twijfel, o.m. te herkennen in erotische en doodsmotieven. Dat hij, zij het marginaal, in meerdere vernieuwingsbewegingen figureerde, bracht werk van hem tot in New York. The American painter and sculptor Keith Haring, who died in 1990, was undisputedly one of the most popular artists in the 20th century. More than ten years after his death, his output is still as important to younger artists as it is to the wider public. Therefore it seems all the more essential to present a profile of the less well-known Haring - looking beyond the Haring of the ubiquitous, world-famous cheerful matchstick figures. Catalogue of Early Netherlandish Painting: Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (CENP 5). The fifth volume examines all the works painted by anonymous masters. Most works of the 15th and early 16th centuries are not signed. Several of these works have not proved possible to attribute to a known painter or to a master with a provisional name. These works, labelled as anonymous, have been little studied until now, because they are in general thought to be of lesser quality, and because researchers have prioritised the study of more important masters. It is, however, becoming increasingly apparent that these reflect the ongoing production of the time in the Southern Netherlands. Beside the fact that these paintings represent the themes that enjoyed a certain popularity at the time, their study opens perspectives onto the socio-economic context and workshop practice. These paintings could be destined for a broad market and betray different working methods allowing for swift execution in several copies. Furthermore, two of these anonymous works, dating from around 1400 or a little bit later, rank amongst the rare representatives of pictorial production in the Southern Netherlands prior to the technical innovations introduced by the Flemish Primitives. This production is by convention called ?pre-Eyckian painting?.
