Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) is wereldberoemd vanwege zijn taferelen van het dagelijks leven, zoals een keukenmeid die melk inschenkt, een vrouw die muziekles krijgt, of een dame die een brief schrijft. Als beginnende schilder richtte Vermeer zich echter op traditionele onderwerpen, ontleend aan de Bijbel en de klassieke mythologie. De jonge, tot nu toe onderbelichte schilder Vermeer is het onderwerp van dit rijk geillustreerde boek en een tentoonstelling in het Mauritshuis. De tentoonstelling herenigt de drie meesterwerken uit het begin van Vermeers artistieke loopbaan: Diana en haar nymfen (c. 1653, Mauritshuis), Jezus in het huis van Martha en Maria (ca. 1655, Edinburgh) en De Koppelaarster (1656, Dresden). Deze drie schilderijen zijn recent gerestaureerd en voor het eerst samen in Nederland te zien. Ze tonen een kunstenaar op zoek naar zijn eigen stijl. Verscheen naar aanleiding van de gelijknamige presentatie in het Mauritshuis te Den Haag.

The works discussed span the entirety of Rubens?s career and attest to the complexity of the iconographic division in which the depictions of Jesus Christ?s public life were thought and created. The present volume V - 2 of the Corpus Rubenianum catalogues Rubens?s exploration and representation of the theme of the public life of Christ. The period in Christ?s life during which he spread his message by wandering and preaching with the apostles in the Holy Land, offered a particularly poignant and important part of religious discourse within the context of the Counter-Reformation period in the Netherlands. In order to rebut the Calvinists and their call for the stripping of imagery and lavish decoration from churches, and the destruction of furniture and altarpieces that followed, the Roman Catholic Church sought to establish an innovative and powerful visual rhetoric with renewed urgency. edition of the collected works on the art of painting by the Scottish artist John Burnet (1784-1868), illustrated by himself. He dedicated the present work to Sir Thomas Lawrence, the President of the Royal Academy. It is divided into three parts: on composition, chiaroscuro (light and shadow), and colour. The text does not instruct the reader to paint but rather to understand painting, making this a manual for looking at paintings and an introduction to connoisseurship. Being able to converse about art had become an important part of social life for the upper class and this work would prove welcome for anybody who wished to be able to understand art better. It was a valuable work, in a luxurious binding and illustrated thoroughly, partly with coloured plates. Burnet was a respected artist who made all of the reproductions himself, for which he used a combination of etching, aquatint and hand-colouring. As examples Burnet used many famous paintings of Italian, Flemish and Dutch artists, such as Paulus Potter, Adriaan van Ostade, Claude, Rubens, Albert Cuyp, Ter Borch, Rembrandt, Pieter de Hooghe, Van Dyck, Gab. Metsu, Ger. Dou, Adr. van de Velde, David Teniers, Wouwermans, Hondecoeter, Frans Hals, Corregio, Raffael, Titian and Veronese.

Rare second edition printed in an unspecified small number. The first edition was published in Brussels in 1808 in two volumes. The author (Maastricht 1743-1818) chose a medical career and became a member of the Académie de Bruxelles. In this long study he deals with the formation of a painting collection and its technical aspects such as cleaning , restoration, safeguarding against deterioration etc. He also discusses the merits of different schools of paintings and e.g. the system that ''de Piles'' had devised to judge the quality of paintings. He was one of the first to rehabilitate the 17th century Dutch School of painting which was all but forgotten in the 18th century.
