‎edition of the collected works on the art of painting by the Scottish artist John Burnet (1784-1868), illustrated by himself. He dedicated the present work to Sir Thomas Lawrence, the President of the Royal Academy. It is divided into three parts: on composition, chiaroscuro (light and shadow), and colour. The text does not instruct the reader to paint but rather to understand painting, making this a manual for looking at paintings and an introduction to connoisseurship. Being able to converse about art had become an important part of social life for the upper class and this work would prove welcome for anybody who wished to be able to understand art better. It was a valuable work, in a luxurious binding and illustrated thoroughly, partly with coloured plates. Burnet was a respected artist who made all of the reproductions himself, for which he used a combination of etching, aquatint and hand-colouring. As examples Burnet used many famous paintings of Italian, Flemish and Dutch artists, such as Paulus Potter, Adriaan van Ostade, Claude, Rubens, Albert Cuyp, Ter Borch, Rembrandt, Pieter de Hooghe, Van Dyck, Gab. Metsu, Ger. Dou, Adr. van de Velde, David Teniers, Wouwermans, Hondecoeter, Frans Hals, Corregio, Raffael, Titian and Veronese. ‎

‎Rare second edition printed in an unspecified small number. The first edition was published in Brussels in 1808 in two volumes. The author (Maastricht 1743-1818) chose a medical career and became a member of the Académie de Bruxelles. In this long study he deals with the formation of a painting collection and its technical aspects such as cleaning , restoration, safeguarding against deterioration etc. He also discusses the merits of different schools of paintings and e.g. the system that ''de Piles'' had devised to judge the quality of paintings. He was one of the first to rehabilitate the 17th century Dutch School of painting which was all but forgotten in the 18th century. ‎Inleiding van Willy van den Bussche. Vijftien jaar na de Retrospectieve Floris Jespers (1889-1965) die in 1989 in het Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten te Antwerpen plaats had, wordt opnieuw de gelegenheid geboden om het omvangrijke en gevarieerde oeuvre van de kunstenaar op zijn waarde te schatten. Tijdens het Interbellum werd Jespers gerekend tot de tenoren van de modernistische schilderkunst in Belgie. In en kort na de Eerste Wereldoorlog behoorde hij, samen met zijn broer de beeldhouwer Oscar Jespers en de dadaist Paul Joostens, tot de kring rond de dichter-criticus Paul Van Ostaijen die de invloed van het Europese fauvisme, expressionisme, kubisme en futurisme onderging. In de jaren twintig sloot hij zich aan bij de in Brussel opererende Selection- en Centauregroepen. Toonaangevende critici in binnen- en buitenland noemden zijn naam in een adem met die van Permeke, De Smet en Van den Berghe als toonaangevende 'Vlaamse Expressionisten'. Zijn 'post-expressionistisch' werk is uiterst gevarieerd door zijn meesterschap in verschillende media: naast de olieschilderijen ontstaan talrijke tekeningen, etsen en achterglasschilderijen waarin landelijke thema's afwisselen met circustaferelen. In zijn satirisch geinspireerde urbane thema's stileert hij vaak met een naar het art-deco neigend formalisme. De 'bange jaren dertig' brengen een kentering: Jespers maakt een ommezwaai naar een traditiegebonden schilderkunst. Series 'Vlaamse en Waalse landschappen', stillevens, portretten vormen een terugkeer naar een 'specialistische' schilderkunst, terwijl hij toch ook een bijdrage levert tot de heropleving van de monumentale kunst door zijn ontwerpen voor tapijten voor de Wereldtentoonstellingen te Parijs en New York. Kort na de Tweede Wereldoorlog vindt Jespers opnieuw aansluiting bij het internationale modernisme, om vervolgens, in de jaren vijftig, zich te herbronnen met de 'Congolese schoonheid', een nieuw hoogtepunt., ‎
