‎Summary Confronted with the shifting idea of the authority of a text and its transmission and reception in a variety of genres, settings and contexts, this collective volume envisages to enlarge and deepen our understanding of these notions by tangling literary forgery and emulation. Authority and authoritative literary productions provoke all kinds of interest and emulation. Hermeneutical techniques, detailed exegesis and historical critique are invoked to put authority, and indeed also possible falsifications, to the test. ‎Het leven van de auteur en geleerde Helene Nolthenius stond in het teken van grote thema's: muziek, religie, Italie, middeleeuwen. Als hoogleraar in de muziekgeschiedenis van de oudheid en de middeleeuwen aan de Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht trok zij aandacht door de rol die zij toekende aan verbeeldingskracht in historisch onderzoek, waarmee zij vooruitliep op de moderne cultuurwetenschap. Als auteur van historische romans muntte zij uit door de precisie waarmee zij gegevens verwerkte. Haar studies van het Duecento, het Gregoriaans en Franciscus van Assisi kregen enorme verbreiding. In Rede en vervoering wordt aandacht besteedt aan de plaats die Nolthenius innam binnen een erudiete Nederlandse elite, die stand hield totdat de universiteit definitief in de greep raakte van 'kennisproductie'. In deze elite, wortelend in de vooroorlogse tijd, nam zij als flamboyante vrouwelijke geleerde een eenzame plaats in. Zij zocht een verheven wereld 'weg van hier', maar wist zich getemperd door de rationaliteit die ze zichzelf oplegde. Verder worden in dit boek persoonlijke ontwikkelingen belicht, zowel voor als na haar werkzame leven. ‎
