The wonderful portraits of children that Dutch and Flemish artists painted in the late Renaissance and Baroque periods offer a fascinating look not just at the youngsters themselves - along with their clothes, toys, and pets - but also at the society in which they lived. The charming pictures in this unique book demonstrate that 500 years ago children were, as they are now, their parents' pride and joy. At first glance, these young people in their elaborate clothing and fancy headgear hardly resemble modern youth. But their fresh faces and vivid expressions transcend time. Superb full-page colorplates reproduce 85 of the best of these portraits - by famous and lesser-known artists alike - while essays by leading art and cultural historians set them in context. Countless parents have formal portraits or studio photographs made of their children. For them, as well as for art lovers and students, Pride and Joy should hold an irresistible fascination. George Grosz (German; born Georg Ehrenfried Gro ; July 26, 1893 - July 6, 1959) was a German artist known especially for his caricatural drawings and paintings of Berlin life in the 1920s. He was a prominent member of the Berlin Dada and New Objectivity groups during the Weimar Republic. He immigrated to the United States in 1933, and became a naturalized citizen in 1938. Abandoning the style and subject matter of his earlier work, he exhibited regularly and taught for many years at the Art Students League of New York. In 1959 he returned to Berlin, where he died shortly afterwards.

"Bathing" is closely linked to three issues: the body, hygiene, and social amusement. The naked or subtle covered body lives on the affinity to nature and naturalness: in its graceful movements and its ambience, by bathing amongst others or in oblivious intimacy, in an open landscape (from Arcadia to tropical paradises) or in a narrow boudoir or an old German bathing hall. The hygienic issue, on the other hand, is rather associated with terms of health and well-being than with beauty. The social amusement issue ranges from water sports to life on the beach to a stage for social life. Baths are a place of freedom, of informality and fantasy, of distraction and eroticism. Furthermore the bathing motif also stimulates allegorical, mythological and literary fields, like images of "The Fountain of Youth" or "Bathing Diana with Nymphs" or "Venus". The catalogue shows the most beautiful bathing scenes posessed by the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett, amongst them works by D rer, Rembrandt, Degas and Otto M ller.

Artist Ben Sledsens (b. 1991) combines an indepth knowledge of the visual tradition with his own mythology. With his large-scale canvases, he shows us fragments from his imaginary world, a Utopia in which he himself wants to live. His colors and reinterpretations of the landscape are reminiscent of artists such as Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard, Claude Monet, Henri Rousseau and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Although his landscapes, portraits, and historical and daily scenes have an idyllic appearance, there is also a certain tension and mystery in his scenes. He always builds up his compositions around a moment of climax with an open beginning and end. By reusing motifs, themes, objects and poses, Sledsens creates an intriguing puzzle of references and builds a recognizable, coherent, romantic and utopian oeuvre. This publication bundles Sledsens' most recent work, from 2018 to the present.
