‎Alfons Jozef de Ridder ist das achte von zehn Kindern des B ckers Christiaan de Ridder und Adela van Elst. Er wurde in Antwerpen geboren. Sp ter leiht er sich sein Pseudonym aus einem nahe gelegenen Wald namens Helsschot. Er wird aus dem K niglichen Athen um verwiesen und arbeitet als Laufbursche f r Antwerpener Firmen. 1903 erhielt er ein Diplom am Antwerp Higher Trade Institute. In Paris arbeitet er als Angestellter bei einem wohlhabenden argentinischen Gesch ftsmann. Seine Erfahrungen mit einigen Mietern eines Pariser Hauses verarbeitet er in seinem Deb troman Villa des roses (1914). 1908 bekommt er eine Anstellung bei der Gustowerf in Schiedam. Nach seiner R ckkehr nach Belgien wurde er Kaufmann und war einige Zeit Korrespondent des NieuweRotterdamsche Courant.1931 gr ndete er seine eigene Werbeagentur, die bis zu seinem Tod 1960 bestand.‎
