Summary In his preaching, does Augustine of Hippo adapt his biblical commentaries and, if so, according to what criteria? To answer this question, this book studies the exegesis of some twenty sermons preached on the Gospel of Matthew. The first chapter places them in their historical, geographical, polemical and liturgical contexts. The following chapters investigate the patristic tradition and the Augustinian works in order to shed light on the specificity of the interpretations; the rhetorical dimension is also taken into account. Through their scriptural interpretations, these sermons assume the concrete situation of the audience and are inserted into the dynamics of the liturgy from which they receive the material for the commentary and the finality that guides it. Their exegesis is situated at the intersection between the Word of God which it extends and implements (chapters 2 to 4) and the responses it seeks to elicit from the listeners (chapters 5 to 7). This desire to edify the listeners, both personally and communally, while aiming at spiritual progress and orthopraxis rooted in the confessed truth, helps to enlighten the preacher's adaptation of the Sermons on Matthew. Summary In the last decade, biblical exegesis has gradually taken into consideration the so-called "spatial turn." However, the literary concept of space and its narrative analysis have found less interest than the study of space as a social and cultural phenomenon. This obvious gap in biblical research has become the impulse for the present work, dedicated to the book of Judith. Its aim is, on the one hand, to present the narrative analysis of space as a still-developing field in non-biblical literature and, on the other, to show how this promising approach can be developed in biblical studies. In particular, this monograph provides the narrative analysis and interpretation of space in the book of Judith in response. The first part of the study offers a synthetic overview of perceptions, concepts and theories of space from antiquity to contemporary research, and of the theoretical approaches to space in the Old Testament. The main part is dedicated to the analysis of space on the micro and macro levels of the Judith story through the application of Katrin Dennerlein's narratological theory of space. Thus, it can be demonstrated to what extent an in-depth analysis of the notion of space can contribute to better understand its thematic and symbolic dimension in the narrative, its function of characterising persons and actions, its role as a structuring element in the story and, last but not least, as a vehicle for an ideological and theological message. Summary The present volume comprises editions, by several of the major scholars now working in the field of medieval Irish apocrypha, of a selection of important eschatological texts. Two of these, edited by John Carey, are works original to Ireland: The Vision of Adomnán, an account of the afterworld notable for its vividness and complexity; and The Two Sorrows of the Kingdom of Heaven, a shorter text which describes the judgement of souls and the end of the world with reference to the destinies of Enoch and Elijah. Caoimhín Breatnach provides editions of the Irish versions of some of the fundamental texts of Christian apocalyptic: The Assumption of Mary (supplemented by a closely related Latin variant, edited by Joseph Flahive), and one of the Redactions of The Vision of Saint Paul. Professor Breatnach also contributes a series of accounts of Antichrist: these belong to a type that has long been regarded as typically Irish, but for which Charles D. Wright here supplies a broader context in an innovative and important study. Fr Martin McNamara MSC introduces the collection with a discussion of "Some Aspects of Medieval Irish Eschatology". This is the first volume of a two-part collection: the texts edited in the sequel (CCSA 22) are concerned with the events of the end time, and in particular with the theme of the signs before the Day of Judgement. Prof. Caoimhín Breatnach publishes Garbh éirghid iodhain bhrátha, Harshly do the pangs of Doomsday, as well as two short Irish texts on the Fifteen Signs Before Doomsday and on Doomsday. Prof. Pádraig A. Breatnach provides the edition of A Tract on the Fifteen Signs of Doomsday. Fr Martin McNamara MSC publishes two short studies in Appendices: the first one on the duration of the Day of Doom (The Day of Doom a Thousand Years, in Appendix 1); the second one concerns a quotation in the Fifteen Signs text edited by Caoimhín Breatnach from the 15th-century Latin theologian Pelbartus (Passage from Pelbartus, Advent Sermon IV: Appendix 2).
