The present work, together with Popper's ""On the Theory of the Objective Mind"", also published in 1968, constitutes an important contribution to what is known as Popperian cosmology, in which Popper divides the world into three parts. ""Epistemology Without a Knowing Subject"" explores the third world.""The main topic of this lecture will be what I often call, for want of a better name, ""the third world"". To explain this expression I will point out that, without taking the word ""world"" or ""universe"" too seriously, we may distinguish the following three worlds or universes" first, the world of physical objects or of physical states secondly, the world of states of consciousness, or of mental states [...]" and thirdly the world of objective contents of thought, especially of scientific and poetic thoughts and of works of art. Thus what I call ""the third world"" has admittedly much in common with Plato's theory of forms or ideas, and therefore also with Hegel's objective spirit, though my theory differs radically, in some decisive respects. ‎"Fils illégitime d'un patricien genevois et d'une domestique, rejeté par son père, confié par sa mère à l'Hôpital général, le libraire Pierre Frémont dit Butini (1727-1792) a été souvent poursuivi et emprisonné pour avoir imprimé des pamphlets interdits ou s'être livré de façon immodérée au jeu. Cela ne semble pas suffisant pour lui assurer des titres à la postérité. Ressuscitée par Michel Porret, sa figure surgit pourtant avec un relief aussi inattendu qu'intrigant par le recueil des «pensées nocturnes» qu'il a consignées au fil des années et que Porret a retrouvées dans les archives d'Etat de Genève, où elles reposaient comme pièce à conviction d'un procès criminel. Muni d'une clé des songes de sa façon, Frémont interprète numériquement ses visions, selon un inventaire thématique, et selon une recette destinée à lui fournir la martingale qui lui vaudrait de gagner un gros lot synonyme de réparation sociale. Ce portrait d'un marginal mi-révolté, mi-opportuniste est en vérité bien plus que l'exhumation d'un personnage oublié. Ce que l'historien offre au lecteur est un passionnant exemple d'une histoire sociale sachant faire fond sur une connaissance approfondie de la Genève de l'époque, ainsi que des institutions juridiques qui la régissent, d'une histoire des mentalités qui met en perspective le jeu des croyances sous-jacentes à des comportements déviants, ainsi que d'une histoire du rêve qui, bien qu'avertie de la réflexion freudienne, ne tombe jamais dans le piège d'interprétations simplistes ou anachroniques.
