Bridgman/ with best regards/ A.Tarski."", of Tarski's important contribution to his main topic, to which he provided fundamental contributions: The semantic theory of truth. Tarski's semantic conception of truth plays a central role in modern logic as well as in contemporary philosophy of language. Tarski's shy nature means that he rarely gave away inscribed copies of his works, and a presentation-copy like the present is a rare sight. The paper is centered around the notion of truth. The main problem is that of giving a satisfactory definition of this notion, i.e., a definition which is materially adequate and formally correct. Tarski (1901-1983) has contributed seminally to the fields of mathematics and logic in a number of ways, and together with Frege, Russell and Gödel, he now ranks as one of the most important contributors to the field of modern logic. ‎

‎Exceedingly scarce first edition, off-print with own pagination also, of this very important article by one of the four greatest logicians ever, the Polish-American Alfred Tarski.Tarski's theory of definability, which he presents in this article, belongs to one of his main contributions to logic. Tarski here distinguishes between groups of concepts within the methodology of the deductive sciences: 1) concepts such as ""axiom"", ""theorem"", ""rule of inference"", ""proof"", and 2) ""primitive (undefined) concept"" (or ""primitive term""), ""definable concept"", ""rule of definition"", ""definition"". ""A far-reaching parallelism can be established between the concepts of the two groups: The primitive concepts correspond to the axioms, the defined concepts to the derivable sentences, the process and rules of definition to the process and rules of proof."" (English translation of the article, 1956, p. 296). Until this article was written, nothing on the subject of methodology of deductive sciences had primarily dealt with the concepts of the first group, but, as Tarski himself states, ""in considering the second group of concepts many interesting and important problems force themselves upon us, some of which are quite analogous to those which arise in connection with the first group."" (Introduction, English translation, 1956, p. 296). ‎The exceedingly scarce first edition of Tarski's classic paper on logic and methodology of Deductive Sciences, published in Polish in Poland only three years after his seminal publication ""Pojecie Prawdy w Jezykach Nauk Dedukcyjnych"" (Polish). [The Concept of Truth in Formalized Languages]. We are not aware of any copies in this first edition available in any library. His high school and undergraduate teaching on axiomatics and logic culminated in this short paper, first published in Polish, then German and finally in 1941 English. The paper is divided into two principal parts, the first being an introduction to the symbolic treatment of formal logic concluding with a section on the deductive method. The second part, an application of material in the first to the construction of a deductive system for the arithmetic of real numbers. ‎

L'humaine condition est politique, en un sens fort que les études ici rassemblées analysent selon trois rapports : pensée et politique, politique et éthique, éthique et pensée. ‎"Voici un fort bel ouvrage, bien pensé, bien construit, bien écrit, et qui fourmille d'informations et de citations toutes plus intéressantes les unes que les autres. L'ensemble s'articule en trois parties: I. Les sciences de l'inerte amorcent une vision laïque du monde ; II. La révélation confrontée aux sciences de la vie ; III. L'exégèse et la nouvelle vision du monde. L'ouvrage s'achève sur une conclusion générale, qui synthétise en quelques pages l'apport des nombreuses conclusions partielles, avec en appendice six annexes: une lettre de Bellarmin au P. Foscarini; un extrait d'une lettre de Descartes au P. Mesland; la profession de foi de Newton en douze articles, suivie de trois paragraphes du même auteur sur la religion ; un extrait du De augmentis scientiarum de Bacon sur la nature, l'objet et les bornes de la théologie naturelle; deux pages de Nieuwentyt sur l'existence de Dieu démontrée par les merveilles de la nature ; et un extrait du Traité élémentaire de géologie de Deluc. Ceci dit, tout au long des trois parties du livre sont passés en revue les rapports entre la science et l'Écriture chez Galilée, Bacon, Descartes, Newton, Leibniz, Fontenelle, Voltaire, Buffon, Diderot, Condorcet, Lyell, Darwin, Loisy et Lagrange, pour ne citer que les noms les plus connus. Autant dire que l'ouvrage est aussi dense que complexe. (...) Mais nous n'en finirions pas de relever des merveilles dans ce trésor d'érudition. Terminons donc ce trop bref compte rendu en invitant vivement à la lecture de cet ouvrage et remercions le courageux éditeur F.-X. de Guibert, spécialiste des ouvrages censurés par l'establishment scientifique contemporain, d'avoir une fois de plus pris des risques en acceptant de publier ce volume excitant pour l'esprit et qui donne un « coup de Bible dans la science », un peu comme naguère Henri Meschonnic parlait de donner « un coup de Bible dans la philosophie »..."
