Most of the papers in this volume consider translation in medieval England (in both Old and Middle English and Anglo-Norman), though translations into other medieval vernaculars are also represented (Icelandic, Dutch, German), as is translation of classical Greek into Latin. Most of the translations are anonymous, though major translators are also included: Cicero, King Alfred, Robert Grosseteste, Jean de Meun, Chaucer. Several papers consider the troubled times during the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries in England, when a number of major translation projects were undertaken; others explore the place of translation in daily life (pro forma letters, gynaecological treatises, forged documents in support of a local shrine, texts rewritten so as to update legal references in them); another considers the importance of paper for the rapid dissemination of translated texts. Also featured prominently is the translation of different sorts of religious texts, originally variously in monastic, eremitical and mendicant milieux, and including the 'translations' for their readers of divine messages received by female visionaries. The more generous understanding of the term indicated by the use of quotation marks for these latter is also reflected in a paper considering representations of heaven and hell in visual arts. All the contributions share an awareness of translation as culturally specific - as originating in and addressing specific contexts: of; for example; nationality, politics, class and gender. Thomas More s'exerca au dialogue en traduisant du grec ceux de Lucien, publies a Paris des 1506 dans un recueil ou il a Erasme pour emule. Il frequenta evidemment ceux de Platon, de Ciceron, et de saint Gregoire le Grand. En 1516 l'Utopie le revela comme un virtuose du genre. En 1529 il publia A Dialogue Concerning Heresies, premier des sept ouvrages en langue anglaise ou il combat l'heresie et tente de freiner la revolution dans l'Etat. Le Dialogue du reconfort, compose en prison, ne put paraitre qu'apres l'avenement d'une reine catholique, Mary, en 1553. Une longue lettre d'aout 1534, ou Margaret Roper raconte a sa belle-soeur Alice un long entretien qu'elle a eu avec leur pere, est souvent appelee Dialogue of Counsel : le prisonnier en est le principal interlocuteur, comme l'est l'oncle Antoine dans le Dialogue of Comfort. En avril 1534 More etait occupe a ecrire des pages qui demontrent, en s'appuyant sur les Peres grecs et latins, que la foi en la presence reelle du Christ dans l'Eucharistie est aussi ancienne que l'Eglise. Les editions patristiques lui faisant defaut en prison, il ne pouvait terminer cette etude. En revanche, l'ecrivain-ne qu'il etait mit a profit l'epreuve multiple de la captivite pour explorer les tresors accumules depuis un demi-siecle dans sa memoire fidele, et pour remonter a la source de tout reconfort. More n'envisage pas un dossier exhaustif concernant la tribulation et le reconfort ; un tel propos s'accorderait mal, du reste, avec le genre litteraire du dialogue. La Bible est neanmoins presente ici, de la Genese a l'Apocalypse, par des centaines d'emprunts, dont plus de cinquante au seul psautier, que l'auteur sait par coeur pour en avoir recite des pages tous les jours. More a rumine et vecu la ? bonne nouvelle ? , en chretien ? catholique ? , in medio Ecclesiae, sachant que l'echelle de Jacob descend du ciel jusqu'aux berges de la Tamise, jusqu'a celles du Danube : son Dialogue a pour cadre la Hongrie en partie annexee par le Turc ottoman. L'Evangile se trouve pleinement ? acculture ? dans son ouvrage, ou les livres inspires jouxtent Platon et Galien, Ciceron et Pline, Juvenal et Martial, Esope et Chaucer. Les fabliaux du Moyen Age y dialoguent avec les classiques de la spiritualite chretienne : Boece en aval de saint Augustin et de Cassien, Gerson dans le sillage de saint Bernard et de saint Thomas d'Aquin. Ce dernier texte de Thomas More est traduit et eclaire par une introduction, des notes et un index biblique par l'abbe Germain Marc'hadour, et l'une de ses anciennes etudiantes, Jocelyne Malhomme. This volume includes a collection of reworked articles which the author, during the last twenty years, dedicated to the origins and conditions constitutive of Christian philosophical-theological thought. From the earliest centuries of the Christian era, human reason was submitted to a particular formal conditioning, in so far as it was necessarily obliged to confront the contents of a divine revelation recognized as necessarily 'true'. The medieval Latin scholar was induced by the social and cultural peculiarities of his time to confront a model of thought which imposes a decisive subordination of natural knowledge ? demonstrated to be imperfect and inconclusive ? to the certainties assured by the faith. The production of this model of philosophia, sensibly different from the dominant paradigms in the classical period, rooted itself in the critical redimensioning of reason introduced into the West by Cicero. Departing from the observation of the failure of the philosophical aspirations of antiquity, the Christian intellectuals effected an operative 'overturning' of the conditions of veridical knowledge. The new wisdom was not the result of a pure interference of religion in the field of rational science; it was, however, directed by a conscious 'conversion' of the philosophers and fulfilled on two sides: on that of the faith, which requires earthly knowledge in order to defend itself from misunderstandings and heresies; and on that of reason, which allows itself to draw upon supernatural revelation for the possession of regulatory principles which guide it in the study of natural things. This book investigates the development of this approach during the course of the centuries which precede, in the West, the rediscovery of Aristotelian epistemology: from Augustine to Boethius, from John Scottus Eriugena to Anselm of Aosta. It moves to the point of describing the return of this methodological approach, at the end of the Medieval Scholastic period, in the results of the anti-Aristotelian critique carried out by the men of the Renaissance in the recovering of a model of thought which had dominated in the Patristic and Early Medieval periods.
