With humour, sensitivity and an acutely personal connection to his subject matter, Francis Al s examines the patterns of various urban sites before weaving his own fables into their tangled social fabric From that point onward, the fables take on a life of their own . A scene as such as a Volkswagen Beetle struggling up a hill in Tijuana (Rehearsal, 1999-2001), a man pushing a block of Ice in Mexico City (Paradox of Prams 1, 1997) or chasing a tornado in the desert (Tornado, 2000-10), or a group of children playing in the streets of Kabul (Reel-Unreel, 2011) can carry, a message that resonates far beyond the work's simple parameters. As the subbtle of his walking piece The Green Line (2004) puts it, "Sometimes doing something poetic can become political, and sometimes doing something political can become poetic". Originally from Belgium but based for the last thirty years in Mexico City, Francis Al s is a truly international artist who has realized works in such diverse locations as Baghdad, Copenhagen, Kabul, Lima, Jerusalem and Tanger. His work has also been exhibited at the world's top museums - including Tate Modern in London, Castello de Rivoli in Turin and the Museum of Modern Art in New York - and featured In the most significant International biennals - Including Gwangju (2009, 2018), Istanbul (1999, 2001, 2015), Sao Paulo (1998, 2005) Venice (1999, 2001, 2007, 2017) and Sydney (2008) as well as in Documenta 13 in Kassel (2012). ‎Leon Kochnitzky naquit a Saint-Josse ten Noode le 2 aout 1982, dans une famille aisee d'origine russo-polonaise fixee en Belgique depuis 1878 et qui avait pris la nationalite belge. Le pere, Michel, etait ingenieur et industriel: il aurait voulu que son fils embrassat la meme carriere mais Leon ne se sentait guere d'attrait pour ce genre d'activites; il s'inscrivit donc en philosophie a l'Universite de Bruxelles; la premiere guerre mondiale l'envoie en exil. Apres un bref sejour a Utrecht, il partit pour Bologne. Des 1907 il avait senti le desir de vivre en Italie, il y conquit, le 15 novembre 1915, le titre de docteur en philosophie. De 1915 a 1919, il sejourna d'abord a Florence, puis a Rome dont il a depeint l'atmosphere; il ecrit des vers, devient fonctionnaire. Seduit par d'Annunzio, il rejoint le poete a Fiume ou il fait, un temps, office de ministre des Affaires etrangeres. Il revient ensuite en Belgique, voyage enormement, ecrit en 1924 un reportage sur la jeune URSS. Fixe ensuite a Paris, il part comme correspondant des Nouvelles litteraires en Amerique du Sud. La guerre de 1940 le voit a New York ou il participe au Belgian Desk de la radio. Revenu en Europe, il vivra tantot a Bruxelles, tantot en Italie ou il mourra le 29 mai 1965. Humaniste complet il laissait une oeuvre abondante et de qualite. Queste pagine intendono rendere omaggio ad un uomo veramente eccezionale, troppo negletto nella sua patria di nascita e in quella di elezione. Piu che ogni altro, siamo consci delle loro manchevolezze per esseere esaurienti un viaggio in America sarebbe stato indispensabile. D'altra parte, non abbiamo avuto adito a tutte le fonti: cosi non ci e stato concesso di consultare certi documenti della fine della vita di Kochnitzky. Languages: Italian.‎
