‎In Venetia, Presso Cornelio Arrivabene, 1584. Petit in-4 de [8]-214 (pour 218)-[2] pages (signature: *4; A-Z4; Aa-Dd4), demi-veau fauve, dos à nerfs, pièce de titre noire. ‎

‎Orné d'une gravure figurant un échiquier, et six autres figurant les différentes pièces du jeu. Première et unique édition italienne, publiée vingt-trois ans après l'originale. "Le prêtre espagnol Ruy López de Segura compta parmi les plus forts joueurs du XVIe siècle, et peut même être considéré comme le premier "champion du monde" européen à la suite de sa victoire éphémère sur Leonardo il Puttino. Son influence fut considérable. En 1550, à Rome, il triompha de tous les joueurs en renom. Philippe II, souverain d'Espagne, qui était grand amateur d'échecs, l'invitait fréquemment à la Cour et le combla d'honneurs." Le Lionnais. Ruy López, surnommé « le père de la théorie », publie en 1561 un des premiers grands manuels de théorie et d'histoire du jeu d'échecs, le Libro de la invencion liberal y arte del juego del Axedrez qui contribuera grandement au développement du jeu en Europe par la promotion de la prise en passant qui était alors ignorée en Italie; une revue exhaustive des ouvertures pratiquées à l'époque ainsi que par la première analyse de la « partie espagnole » appelée aussi « ouverture Ruy López ».
