This richly illustrated book uses mainly unpublished documentation to investigate a range of multi-media urban, architectural and artistic projects promoted by Paul III. It adopts a multi-disciplinary approach to deepen our knowledge of Rome's visual culture after the Sack of 1527, providing a nuanced and fresh understanding of the social, economic and political conditions underpinning the creation of celebrated masterpieces, like Michelangelo's Last Judgement or his design of the Campidoglio. ‎Fondateur d'une dynastie de peintres, Noël Coypel (1628-1707) s'illustra brillamment dans plusieurs domaines : plafonds, peintures de chevalet, arts graphiques, cartons de tapisserie. Après avoir reçu une première formation à Orléans, il revint à Paris et participa aux décors de l'opéra Orfeo de Luigi Rossi. Repéré par le peintre Charles Errard, alors directeur des décors royaux du Louvre, le grand décor devint la partie essentielle de son activité : le parlement de Rennes tout d'abord, puis les demeures royales ou encore, au crépuscule de sa vie, les Invalides. Certains de ces ensembles ont aujourd'hui disparu-au Louvre, à Fontainebleau, au Palais-Royal, et même ceux du premier Versailles-d'autres ne sont connus que par quelques tableaux, qui seront présentés à l'exposition. Cette première exposition consacrée à Noël Coypel (du 26 septembre 2023 au 28 janvier 2024 - Salle des gardes de la Reine et Grand Trianon) mettra à l'honneur l'artiste à travers une sélection de 90 oeuvres (peintures, dessins, cartons de tapisserie, etc.) présentées au sein du Grand Trianon et au château de Versailles dans la salle des gardes de la Reine, sous un décor qu'il a lui-même réalisé et qui a fait l'objet d'une restauration entre 2015 et 2017. En prolongement de cette exposition, le musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes organisera à son tour une exposition sur l'ensemble de la carrière du peintre en 2024. En parallèle, Noël Coypel franchit avec brio les étapes de la carrière académique. Reçu en 1663 à l'Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, il fut dès 1664 nommé professeur, avant de prendre la tête de l'Académie de France à Rome de 1673 à 1675, puis celle de l'Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture en 1695. ‎

‎Summary The reader of Boccaccio's voluminous writings, from the early Filocolo through the Decameron and to the later Epistles, cannot help but marvel at the pervasive engagement with the power and reach of consolation. Time and again, his protagonists suffer heartache and tribulation and seek comfort in the words of others or, significantly, in the reading of literature. These scenes are accompanied, tellingly, by the author's own declarations for the care and solace of his readers. Although scholars have long recognized its importance, this wide-ranging and multifaceted exploration of the consolatory value of literature has not received the attention it deserves. Boccaccio and the Consolation of Literature is the first sustained study of Boccaccio's consoling fictions as well as his reflections on the way literature can, and should, offer solace. Across five interlocking chapters, the book analyzes the affective, exemplary, and cognitive modes of consolation that mark the poet's works; but it also underlines the critical dialogue with the ancient and medieval traditions Boccaccio inherits. While his narratives introduce figures and tropes that expound Stoic, Boethian, and Dantesque views of consolation - calling to overcome sorrow through curbing the passions that lead to grief - Boccaccio repeatedly dramatizes the limits of these traditions. In laying bare these limits and inviting readers instead to find comfort in shared sorrow or in the active pursuit of worldly desires Boccaccio fashions a new vision of consolatio for the later Middle Ages.‎
