‎Manuscripts of Leo the Great?s Letters. The Transmission and Reception of Papal Documents in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 516 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:36 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503589664.‎

‎Summary This book explores the transmission of the letters of Leo the Great (pope, 440-461). After setting out the contours of Leo's papacy and the factors contributing to the sending and subsequent transmission of his letters to posterity, it deals in detail with around sixty collections of Leo's letters and over 300 manuscripts ranging in date from the sixth up to the sixteenth century. Each period of the Middle Ages is introduced as the context for collecting and copying the letters, and the relationships between the letter collections themselves are traced. The result is a survey of the impact of Leo the Great upon Latin Christendom, an impact that was felt in theology and canon law, especially from the age of the Emperor Justinian to the Council of Ferrara-Florence, and moving through the major monasteries of Europe from Corbie to Clairvaux. At every cultural Renaissance, Leo was a presence, being copied, rearranged, interpreted, and eventually printed. This book is a testament to the legacy of one of the mid-fifth century's most influential figures. ‎Canon Law and Christian Societies Between Christianity and Islam. An Arabic Canon Collection From al-Andalus and its Transcultural Contexts‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 434 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:2 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503607269.‎

‎Summary The unique Arabic version of the Iberian canon law code 'Collectio Hispana', preserved in a mid-eleventh-century manuscript of the Royal Library of El Escorial, has been deemed ?the most distinguished and characteristic? work of medieval Andalusi Christian writing. It represents an exceptional source witness to the internal legal organisation of Christian communities in Muslim-dominated al-Andalus as well as to their acculturation to Islamicate environments. Yet, the Arabic collection has received only little scholarly attention so far. This volume presents the results of a recent interdisciplinary research project on the Arabic canon law manuscript, flanked by contributions from neigbouring fields of research that allow for a comparative assessment of the substantial new findings. The individual chapters in this volume address issues such as the origins of the Arabic law code and its sole transmitting manuscript, its language and translation strategies, its source value for both the persistence and transformation of ecclesiastical institutions after the Muslim conquest, or the law code's position in the judicial practice of al-Andalus. The volume brings together the scholarly expertise of distinguished specialists in a broad range of disciplines, e.g. history, Arabic and Latin philology, medieval palaeography and codicology, archaeology, coptology, theology and history of law. ‎ducs d'Arenberg et la musique au XVIIIe siecle. Histoire d'une collection musicale,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2010 Hardback, IV+268 p., 184 colour ill., 220 x 280 mm. ISBN 9782503534312.‎

Languages : French.‎

‎Reading Images and Texts <br>Medieval Images and Texts as Forms of Communication. Papers from the Third Utrecht Symposium on Medieval Literacy, Utrecht, 7-9 December 2000‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2005 Hardcover. X 546 p., 141 b/w ill. 19 colour ill., 160 x 240 mm, Languages: English, Latin, Fine copy. Including an index. ISBN 9782503514376.‎

‎The interactions between non-verbal and verbal forms of communication, more in particular the relations between visual symbols other than writing and the recording of speech in writing, are important for the evaluation of both images and texts.<br>In recent years the relations between images and texts have benefitted from an increase in scholarly attention. In medieval studies, art historians, historians, codicologists, philologists and others have applied their methods to the study of illuminated manuscripts and other works of art. These studies have shifted from a concern about the contents of the messages contained in the artefacts (e.g. in iconography) to an interest in the ways in which they were communicated to their intended audiences. The perception of texts and images, their reception by contemporaries and by later generations have become topics in their own right. The analysis of individual manuscripts and works of art remains the basis for any consideration of their transmission and uses. Yet the time has come for an evaluation of the results of recent work on medieval communication. The interactions between non-verbal and verbal forms of communication, more in particular the relations between visual symbols other than writing and the recording of speech in writing, are important for the evaluation of both images and texts.<br>According to some, medieval images may be ?read?. According to others, the perception of images is fundamentally different from that of texts. Do images have a morphology (colours, lines, planes), a syntax and semantics of their own? In other words: do both texts and images have a ?grammar?? Is it useful to speak of ?visual literacy?? Can texts be considered as images? How are texts and images perceived? Do they communicate different kinds of messages? Can an image?s message be put into words? In which social contexts does medieval man prefer the visual to the textual? What about the interplay of texts and images (e.g. in rituals and ceremonies)? Do we observe an evolution in the perception of images due to the development of a literate mentality? These are some of the questions discussed in the contributions to this volume.‎
