‎From the 16th to the 19th century, illuminated manuscripts were collected by the great printer-publisher Christophe Plantin and his Moretus successors and descendants. Ranging in date from the 9th to the mid-16th centuries, the manuscripts in the Museum Plantin-Moretus come from all over Europe, chiefly the Southern Netherlands and France with a significant representation of 15th-century Dutch illumination. More surprisingly, about a quarter of the collection comes from England: manuscripts of the 10th to 15th centuries that left the country with Catholic refugees. Alongside the acknowledged masterpieces and rarities, like the Bohemian Bible of 1402, are volumes that have remained virtually unknown, their aesthetic appeal and historical or textual interest often passing unnoticed in the absence of published reproductions. In this beautifully produced catalogue, each of the 102 volumes is illustrated in colour, with more extensive coverage of the 55 volumes with the most rewarding illumination. For the first time it is possible to gauge the extent and nature of this fascinating and under-explored collection, still housed in the building on the Vrijdagmarkt in Antwerp to which Plantin moved his famous sign of the Golden Compasses in 1576. ‎The Anjou Bible, now kept in the Theology Faculty's Maurits Sabbe Library of the University of Leuven (Belgium) is a superbly illuminated manuscript created at the Royal Court of Naples in the turbulent fourteenth century. At this time much of Central and Southern Europe was governed by the successful dynasty of Anjou, which continued to expand its territories and encouraged artists and writers like Giotto, Simone Martini, Boccaccio and Petrarch. In 1328, after the death of her father, Joanna of Anjou became the official heir to the prosperous Kingdom of Naples and Sicily. Several years later her grandfather, Robert I, gave Joanna and her young fiance Andrew of Hungary a precious gift, which became known as the Anjou Bible, a manuscript that is priceless from a historical and art-historical point of view. In addition to Bible texts and splendid miniatures, it contains a wealth of historical information about the house of Anjou and the book's origins. One of the artists responsible for the magnificent painting was Cristophorus Orimina, the leading illuminator in Naples, who signed the work. The Anjou Bible has now been carefully conserved and studied: the research findings are brought together in this book. Essays by some of the most noted experts in the field describe how the arts were promoted at the court of Robert I of Anjou and also shed light on the Bible's genesis and on all the research methods and results. ‎Blut und Wärme dem Körper zu geben im natürlich erforderten Maass, sei der denkenden Köchin Streben, ihre Sorg' ohn' Unterlass; so das Vorwort der Verfasserin, von der wir sonst keine persönlichen Angaben haben. Laut eingeklebtem Zettel im Vorderdeckel stammt das Buch aus der Papierhandlung Scholl in Zürich und ein vergilbtes s/w Foto, das zwischen den Seiten liegt, zeigt uns zwei Frauen mit einem Hund, vielleicht Mutter und Tochter, in Kleidern und Frisuren aus dem ersten Viertel des 20. Jh. Hunderte von Rezepten wurden, wohl während Jahren, fehlerfrei in Schönschrift in das Buch eingetragen. Dabei handelt es sich meist um Gerichte für 3 Personen, kostengünstig und einfach zubereitete Hausmannskost, auch Kuchen und Guetzli, wobei die Kosten für jede einzelne Zutat und der genaue Preis für jedes Gericht akribisch notiert wurden (die meisten kosten weniger als einen Franken!); weiter hinten finden wir den Beginn einer Kochkunde (6 S.) und am Ende ein Haushaltungsbuch, wo die Einnahmen und Ausgaben während 3 Monaten eingetragen wurden. Dort wird auch sichtbar, dass die Autorin Kurse gab (Kochkurse?) und so die Haushaltskasse aufbesserte. Image disp.‎

‎Belle lettre de l'écrivain, historien chartiste et archiviste Francis Wey (1812-1882), dans laquelle il affirme sa soif de reconnaissance, notamment de la part du "duc de P." (peut-être Ernest Arrighi de Casanova, duc de Padoue, ministre de l'intérieur depuis 1859).‎

‎Ansichten und Karten, zusammengestellt von Emil Wick, Mitglied S.A.C., nebst einer handschriftlichen Geschichte des Wallis. Nach dem Tod des Autors an die Bibliothek der S.A.C.-Sektion Basel vererbt.‎

‎ Um 1864, in-8vo, eingebunden sind 7 mehrfach gefaltete u. gestoch. Gipfelpanoramen (60x17,5 cm) und 6 farbige, doppelseitige Karten, alle vom Bibliographischen Institut in Hildburghausen, gefolgt von 3 Bll. eng in Tinte von Hand beschriftet, mehrfach verstempelt „Bibliothek Section Basel des S.A.C.“ mit hs. Bibliothekssignatur, Spiegel mit hs. Angaben zum Autor und Inhaltsverzeichnis (die Bibl. wurde um 2000 insgesamt verkauft) / Exlibris Peter E. Obergfell, schwarzer Leineneinband mit hs. Titelschildchen und Bibl.- Signatur auf Vorderdeckel, leicht fleckig, an Unterkanten etwas aufgeplatzt, ansonsten guter fester Zustand. ‎

‎Dieses schwarze Büchlein begleitete seinen Besitzer auf so manche Bergtour. Es enthält fein gravierte Bergpanoramen und farbige Karten aus H.A. Berlepschs ,Illustrirtem Schweizer-Führer’ (Meyer’s Reisebücher) sowie eine kurze handschriftliche Geschichte des Wallis von der Hand des Autors mit dem Titel ,Geschichte des Wallis nach Furrer u.a.’. Wick trug die Daten, an denen er selbst auf den Gipfeln stand, mit Bleistift in die Panoramen ein. Er ergänzte sogar einen Gipfel mit Namen und Fragezeichen auf einem der Panoramen. Emil Wick (gest. 1894) ist höchstwahrscheinlich der berühmte Basler Mechaniker, Optiker und Pionier der Daguerreotypie (1816-1894), welcher durch sein Werk zu bescheidenem Wohlstand kam und ab 1861 seine Werkstatt verkaufte und sich nun ganz seinen Liebhabereien und dem Reisen widmete.
