‎Faksimile edition of a work that is considered to be the first printed book that is consacrated to the Alpes (1574), «Vallesiae descriptio» being a historical topographical publication on the canton of Wallis and on the Alps. Froschauerus, (Zürich, Froschauer), 1574, in-8°, 8 leaves + 151 leaves + 1 leaf, printed in italics, corner of lower half title-page restored (light stain without touching the text), contemporary full overlapping vellum binding, small obstruction (no loss) to spine, else a very clean and bright copy in fine condition. ‎

‎First edition. ‘Considered to be the first printed book entirly devoted to the Alps’. Erste Ausgabe der historisch-topographischen Schrift über das Wallis und die Alpen. “Dieses ist die beste Beschreibung des Walliserlandes, und ist ihres gründlich gelehrten Verfassers allerdings würdig. ... die Anmerkungen über die Naturgeschichte, Alterthümer u.s.f. sind sehr merkwürdig” (Haller).‘Anfänge des Alpinismus’. Mehr noch als die «Vallesiae Descriptio» ist der «De Alpibus Commentarius» ein Meilenstein der alpinen Literatur, dessen Bedeutung darin liegt, dass er sich mit den Alpen als zentralem Thema beschäftigt. Frühere Autoren (z.B. Tschudi, Münster, Stumpf) schenkten dem Gebirge nur nebensächliche Beachtung. Simler schuf eine alpine Enzyklopädie, deren systematische Einteilung für spätere Arbeiten auf diesem Gebiet wegweisend war. Beachtung verdient auch der Umstand, dass Simler krankheitsbedingt die Alpenwelt nicht aus eigener Anschauung kannte.
