‎She is not a stranger to intuition. She takes photographs like an eye-witness?, taking something with her?, a sharp glance that falls on something and makes a still moment out of it. Poetry by a bystander. A silenced story that needs to speak. She records a truce?, a muted resistance. Something coagulates in her pictures. So begins the text by Anna Luyten about the work of the Peruvian-Belgian artist Giannina Urmeneta Ottiker ( 1966, Lima, Peru). Un-There collects her work from the period 2001-2010. Giannina Urmeneta Ottiker lives and works in Ghent. Since she graduated at the Art School of Lima, Barcelona and Ghent, she participated in several group and solo-exhibitions. Her work is also present in the permanent collection of the Biblioth que Nationale in Paris. During 8 years she was the house photographer of the Arts Centre Vooruit in Ghent where she photographed all visiting artists of the international dance, theater and music scene. The virtual reality of the stage still has a strong influence on her work. The stillness in landscape and the silence of characters bring a significant absence in her pictures. The sometimes brutal cut-off of body parts, the use of movement and her interest in color, make them sometimes seem like abstract paintings. Philippe Van Cauteren (Artistic Director of S.M.A.K., Ghent) describes her work as: "(.) photographs that feel like a delicate membrane carefully and diligently peeled off from reality's different layers. Some show a clear outline of a human profile?, others have settled in the undecipherable chaos of the moment."‎
