Burning Beauty is a comprehensive summary of photographer David LaChapelle, stretching from the early 1980's to 2012. Belle photographie de la cantatrice italienne Adela-Juana-Maria dite Adelina Patti (1873-1919).Elle fut utilisée notamment pour illustrer le numéro 32 (première année, du 25 au 31 décembre 1873) de la revue Paris-Théâtre. Petite cassure avec infime manque au coin inférieur droit, frottement au dos dans le coin supérieur droit. Mention manuscrite ancienne à la plume « Adelenina Patti » au dos.

Het jaar is 1937. De 42 jarige Hongaarse beeldhouwer Arthur Fleischmann kwam vanaf Java via een kleine zeilboot aan op Bali. Een nieuw en exotisch hoofdstuk opende zich voor hem. Bewapend met een 35 mm Dolina camera en een gevoelig oog van een artiest, legde hij het leven, gewoontes en schoonheid van het Balinese volk vast in meer dan 1800 foto's. Als de dreiging van de oorlog in de Pacific er niet geweest was, zou hij voor de rest van zijn leven gebleven zijn op het mooie en rustige paradijs. Zich bezig houdend met beeldhouwen an fotograferen van de gracieuze jonge tempel dansers die zijn muzen werden. In plaats daarvan ontsnapte hij naar Australie waar hij een manuscript schreef ten geleide van zijn Balinese foto's. Paul De Vylder (1942 ), kunstenaar, kunsthistoricus, bevlogen auteur, eredocent semiotiek van het KASK, heeft een intrigerend en meeslepend essay geschreven over de manier waarop de mens onontwarbaar verstrikt is in de taal en over wat dat met het mensdier doet. "De goden zijn schijngestalten, dat hebben we al eeuwen lang begrepen. Ze zijn enkel te benaderen via het gouden masker waarmee wij hen hebben getooid en via de namen waarmee wij hen op plechtige wijze kunnen vereren. Gefascineerd door de schittering van het tijdloze goud, hebben wij het zo aan boord gelegd dat de maskers van de koningen steeds de rituele substitutie zijn van de bovennatuurlijke wreedaardigheid van de goddelijke blik of van of zijn afgesmeekt mededogen. De met goud beklede koning is de aardse stand-in van het gouden masker van de goden. Gesteld in semiotische termen is hij, tegelijk, een protocollair 'symbool' en een narratieve 'figuur'. Vergeleken met de schijngestalten van de goden is hij een 'dubbel-gestalte'. Dergelijke dubbelgestalte - 'una persona, duae naturae / n persoon, twee naturen' - kan niets anders dan een mythologisch simulacrum zijn.
