Karel Fonteyne has built up an extensive oeuvre during a career spanning more than 50 years in art and fashion photography. In the late 1960s and 1970s he was a pioneer in the world of art photography. For more than 15 years, Fonteyne was internationally active within the fashion scene, both in Antwerp with early collaborations with Margiela, Dries Van Noten, Walter Van Beirendonck and Dirk Bikkembergs, as well as internationally, with commissions for prestigious magazines such as Vogue, Interview, Bazaar, Marie-Claire or Brutus Magazine in Japan. In 1996 he decided to quit fashion photography and focus exclusively on his work as a contemporary artist. For the group exhibition in the Handelsbeurs, a selection was made of some of his iconic fashion series for Vogue France and one image was realized for Giorgio Armani. Karel Fonteyne's narrative images transcend classical photography in which the artist creates a timeless, sometimes alienating and esoteric atmosphere. His work evokes paradoxical feelings and confronts us with cosmic and mystical elements, our internal world linked to forms of loneliness or isolation, often offset by a perfume of humor or surrealism.

Zhang Haier is one of todays most important Chinese photographers. His early work offers a unique picture of the underbelly of his countrys cities in the 1980s and 90s: Guangzhou, Shanghai, Hong Kong? His best-known photographs, however, are portraits of women: prostitutes, his wife, friends, anonymous subjects. Women he looks at with a clear sexual fascination. Yet the gaze is two-directional: the women are complicit in the privileged relationship that arises between model and photographer; they return his gaze, boldly and provocatively. In this way, 'Les Filles' testifies to a clearly defined era in China: the young women in the portraits struggle with the strict, moralistic society in which they are living.

Auto's. Planten in potten. Twee matrassen tegen een muurtje. Asfalt.

The amiably spontaneous pictures taken by Sam Shaw (1912-1999) are well known: the native and life-long New Yorker shot countless cover photographs for Life and Look in the fifties and sixties, and later also took the still images for the films he produced himself. Shaw and Marilyn Monroe were friends, and he captured her unique aura in countless unpretentious portraits. During the filming of The Seven Year Itch, he staged his probably best known picture with her: Marilyn standing over a subway grate, a waft of air blowing the skirt of her white dress above her knees. Sam Shaw also portrayed almost every major Hollywood star of his day, consistently capturing the moment in his quest for truthfulness, with enthusiasm and from a new perspective, just as if he were selecting the camera angle for a film sequence. The researcher and author Lorie Karnath, the book's editor, enhances the publication with very personal memories of her long-time friend.
