‎Thermodynamique et chimie‎

‎P., Hermann, 1910, un volume in 8, broché, couverture imprimée, (défraîchie, dos cassé, cachets de bibliothèque), 12pp., 579pp.‎

‎---- Seconde édition REDONDUE ET CONSIDERABLEMENT AUGMENTEE ---- "ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF MODERN PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY"". (DSB) ---- "DUHEM began his scientific work with the generalization and application of thermodynamics... Among the subjects treated systematically were thermoelectricity, pyroelectricity... His success with problems in the period 1884/1900 rank him with J.H. Van't Hoff, Ostwald, Arrhénius and H. Le Chatelier as one of the founders of modern physical chemistry. DUHEM's results are of course an extension and elaboration of the pioneer work of Gibbs and Helmholtz. But DUHEM's elaboration, explanation and application of their suggestions in his Traité de mécanique chimique and Thermodynamique et chimie provided a whole generation of french physicists and chemists with their knowledge of chemical thermodynamics... DUHEM's scientific ideas had a major influence on french physical chemistry and particularly on HADAMARD, JOUGUET and the COSSERATS. He was a pioneer in attempting to prove rigorous general theorems about thermodynamics, physical chemistry, Navier-Stokes fluids, finite elasticity and wave propagation. His purely scientific investigations and results in these fields are important, useful and significant today...". (DSB IV pp. 225/233)‎

‎---- PREMIERE EDITION FRANCAISE ---- BEL EXEMPLAIRE ---- "Contains several letters of the author on physical and chemical subjects, especially on combustion published préviously in various journals. The topics covered include respiration, compressibility of gases, solidity and fluidity of bodies, heat, calcination, thermometers, etc. Lettera II, to A. Murray, gives experiments and arguments critical of the respiration theories of Bergman and Scheele". ( Cole N° 449/450 - Duveen p. 224) ---- "In 1765 FONTANA was appointed to the chair of logic and, in 1766, to the chair of physics at the University of Pisa. Also in 1766, Leopold I summoned Fontana to Florence to organize and develop the court's physics laboratory... FONTANA belongs, together with Spallanzani among the major microcospists of the eighteenth century... The exploration of FONTANA's chemical works begun by Icilio Guareschi, also interesting in its applicative aspects. Also noteworthy are Fontana's model of the eudiometer (for measuring the salubrity of air), an apparatus for oxygen therapy, and his studies on the absorbent powers of coal...". (DSB V pp. 55/57) ---- "FONTANA's most outstanding work was a series of experiments on respiration, the calcination of metals, absorption of gases by charcoal, the production of inflammable gas from water and heated charcoal, etc, in which he showed that the weight remains constant in chemical reactions and that different gases follow Boyle's law". ‎----- EDITION ORIGINALE ---- "Descriptions are given of an improved method for conducting the analysis of organic compounds, a chemical method for the preparation of sodium and potassium and the experiments made with the large battery of the Ecole Polytechnique" ---- "The work of Volta inspired many chemists to investigate the chemical effects of the voltaic pile. Gay-Lussac and Thénard were among this number. They were influenced particularly by the news in the winter of 1807-1808 of Davy's isolation of potassium and sodium by the use of the giant voltaic pile at the Royal Institution. Napoleon ordered the construction of an even larger pile at the Ecole Polytechnique and Gay-Lussac and Thénard were placed in charge of it... Although Davy seems to have exhausted the most obvious possibilities, Gay-Lussac and Thénard's report does contain the suggestion that the rate of decomposition of an electrolyte depends only on the strength of the current (and not, for example, on the size of the electrodes) and they used chemical decomposition as a measure of electric current thirty years before Faraday. The Institute's prize of 3000 francs for work in the field of galvanism was awarded to Davy in December 1807 and to Gay-Lussac and Thénard in December 1809... Gay-Lussac and Thénard's really important contribution stemming from Davy's work was their preparation (announced to the Institute on 7 March 1808) of potassium and sodium in reasonable quantities and by purely chemical means. Davy's method of electrolysis had produced only tiny amounts of the new metals...". (DSB V p. 320) ---- Partington IV**2313/ARM1A‎

‎Munchen & Berlin, Oldenbourg, 1905, un volume in 8 relié en cartonnage éditeur (défraîchi), 15pp., 296pp.‎

‎---- EDITION ORIGINALE ---- "HABER's outstanding accomplishment in chemistry, during the first decade of the twentieth century, involved a gas reaction. He was one of many scientists interested in nitrogen fixation. As in virtually all his work, the problem had both theoretical and practical significance and he looked into several possible solutions. Walter Nernst, a leader in physical chemistry, obtained data at variance with HABER's for the combination of nitrogen and hydrogen to form ammonia". (DSB V p. 621) ---- "HABER received the Nobel Prize in 1919". (Partington IV p. 636)**25300/2530/M7AR‎
