Jean Malval s'embarqua pour la Chine en 1930 et fut successivement professeur à l'Université Jésuite "l'Aurore" et chef de service à la maternité de l'Hôpital Sainte-Marie. Réunies dans ce livre, les "images" de Shanghai offertes par Jean Malval sont autant d'hommages à la Chine profonde, celle de humbles, des artisans et des "coolies" qui luttaient pour survivre à l'ombre dorée des Concessions.
