Etude sur la psychologie associationniste anglaise représentée au XIX s notamment par James Mill , John Stuart Mill, Herbert Spencer , Alexandre Bain , George Lewes , Samuel Bailey . Ce livre dont l' E. O. est parue en 1870 ( Paris , Ladrange ) est aussi considéré comme un des premiers manifestes français de la nouvelle psychologie . Critiquant la psychologie spiritualiste de son temps , Théodule A RIBOT ( 1839 - 1916 ) , qui occupa dès sa création la chaire de psychologie expérimentale au Collège de France , s'cfforça de promouvoir une psychologie à caractère scientifique , véritable science autonome , à côté et en dehors de la philosophie . Dans La psychologie moderne ( De Boeck , 2003 ) , S. Nicolas et L. Ferrand écrivent : " Même si Ribot n' a jamais été un expérimentateur au sens strict , il est tout de même considéré comme le père fondateur de la psychologie scientifique française . Il fut en effet un des premiers à rompre avec les méthodes introspectives encore à l' honneur dans le domaine de la psychologie et à appliquer une nouvelle méthode empirique pour l' étude des fonctions normales : la méthode pathologique ".

Third edition.The first major work by Théodule Ribot (1839-1916), 'La Phychologie anglaise contemporaine (Ècole expérimentale)' was already, with perfect precision, determining the path that the author would follow in the rest of his philosophical and psychological career. In the preface to the book Ribot was manifesting, for the first time in France, a whole new school of psychology. Here the author made it clear that after the establishment of the positives sciences, it was now time for the psychology to break free of the spell of philosophy, bound up as it was in metaphysical assumption, and to constitute itself in its own right by renouncing all speculation about origin, nature and ends. Instead the psychology should be science about facts, manifesting itself in two inseparable aspects: the internal aspect of mind and the physiological aspect. The method of introspection, essentially individual and limited by a small number of correctly perceived facts, should therefore be supplemented by a method of externalism: observation and evaluation of the nervous phenomena, children, races, animals, etc.
