La profondeur des peintures sur papier japon super-nacré sont en parfaite harmonie avec la spiritualité et la musicalité de l'oeuvre gidienne, inspirée de la symphonie éponyme de Beethoven que le pasteur emmène Gertrude écouter dans le roman. Jean-Pierre Rémon, peintre de paysage, a représenté les différents cadres et atmosphères du Jura neuchâtelois aux couleurs de la solitude et du rêve. Malus était major du corps des ingénieurs et membre de l'Expédition d'Egypte. Il a été parmi les premiers étudiants à recevoir une éducation scientifique à l'École Polytechnique où il a été initié à l'optique. Il a ensuite enseigné dans cette Ecole. Rare. On 4 January 1808, the French Institute "proposed a prize which required an experimental and theoretical explanation of double refraction. The French 'Newtonian' scientists hoped that Malus would find a precise and general law for double refraction within the framework of an emission theory of light. Malus was a skilled mathematician and during 1807 he had carried out experiments on double refraction. By December 1808 Malus had finished his experimental investigations, which verified the Huygenian law. What remained was a theoretical deduction of the law. In January 1809, Laplace published a memoir in which he deduced Huygens' law within the framework of Newtonian mechanics, using the principle of least action, and Malus considered this an insolence which deprived him of the priority. In 1810 Malus won the prize for his 'Théorie de la double réfraction'. Here he deduced the law following the same method as Laplace, by means of the principle of least action. Malus won the prize therefore mainly because of his original experimental researches and his discussion of the short-range forces that produce double refraction. Herschel shows here that the circulating motions of double-stars were under gravitational forces. Until then the validity of the law of gravity was only established within the solar system. Now, a century after the establishment of the law, it was traced out in the motion of incredibly distant stars and the theory first truly earned its title of Universal. The exact proof of the mutual gravitation of the double-stars was only obtained five years after Herschel's death, when the motions of the stars were more precisely dtermined.One of the most notable of Herschel's discoveries of double-stars, binary stars. A first cataloque of such pairs was published early in 1782 and contained 269, of which 227 were new discoveries. ""Twenty years after the publication of his first cataloque Herschel was of Michell's opinion - Michell had expressed the opinion that the odds in favour of a physical relation between the members of herschel's newly discovered double stars were ""beyond arithmetic"" - but was able to support it by evidence of an entirely novel and much more direct character. A series of observations of Castor, presented in two papers in the ""Philosophical Transaction"" in 1803 (the paper offered here) and 1804, which were fortunately supplemented by an observation of Bradley's in 1759, had shewn a progressive alteration in the direction of the line joining its two components, of such a character as to leave no doubt that the two stars were revolving round one another"" and there were five oher cases in which a similar motion was observed...it was shown that the double-star was really formed by a connected pair of stars near enough to influence one another's mortion.""(Berry in ""A Short History of Astronomy"" pp. 342-43).‎

‎First printing of South's second large star catalogue of the distances and positions of double and triple stars.""Double stars, essentially discovered by Wiiliam Herschel, were of great interest throughout the nineteenth century—new ones being found and position measurements made more precise with each improvement in telescope construction. South, working with John Herschel during the years 1821–1823. reobserved the double stars charted originally by William Herschel, mainly for the purpose of detecting position changes. Their observations helped verify the newly recognized orbital motion of these neighboring stars. Their resulting catalog of 380 double stars, presented to the Royal Society in 1824, earned them the gold medal of the Astronomical Society and the grand prize of the Institut de France. For his second catalog of double stars, two years later, South was awarded the Copley Medal of the Royal Society.""(DSB).‎

During his youth and after he lived and worked in Italy. He was brought to Holland by Bonaventura van Overbeek . In the paper he investigates the polarization-force of double refracting crystals. In 1819 he was able to group all but a few of hundreds of minerals and crystals into mutually consistent optical and mineralogical categories: the primitive form determined the number of axes of double refraction.""He regarded ""all the various phenomena of polarisation of light by reflexion and refraction as brought under the dominion of laws as well determined as those which regulate the motions of the planets."" In 1816 he received the Copley Medal, in 1819 two Rumford Medals, and in 1831 a Royal Medal for the papers in which he announced these discoveries. On the popular level, Brewster’s reputation was established in 1816 by the fad for his kaleidoscope. ‎Édition originale recherchée du second ouvrage d'Alphonse Daudet. Un des des très rares exemplaires de tête sur Chine, avec le frontispice gravé à l'eau-forte par Bracquemond, d'après Racinet, imprimé par Delâtre en double, sur Chine et sur vergé fort. Le frontispice de cet exemplaire par Delatre pourrait être particulier aux exemplaires sur Chine. Le premier recueil de vers de Daudet, Les Amoureuses, paru en 1855 alors qu'il n'avait que dix-huit ans, lui ouvre les portes du monde littéraire et des colonnes des journaux. Trois années plus tard, il publie ce conte en vers, son second ouvrage. « Fantaisie charmante, où l'auteur met en présence deux amoureux, un catholique et une juive, qui, pour se marier, prenent, à l'insu l'un de l'autre, la résolution de changer de religion... ».
