Publié pendant la « drôle de guerre », un livre attribuant les responsabilités du conflit à Hitler et à l'Allemagne par l'historien et philosophe suisse Georges Batault (1887-1963). C'est lui qui cacha Jean Paulhan dans son appartement parisien du 17 rue Marbeau, lorsque celui-ci fut dénoncé comme juif par la femme de Marcel Jouhandeau en mai 1944.
