‎This publication was made on the occasion of the fourth solo exhibition of Rinus Van de Velde at Tim Van Laere Gallery (7 september ? 21 october 2017). Van de Velde is one of the leading figures of the Belgian contemporary art scene. Over the past few years, he has built a strikingly coherent oeuvre, mainly consisting of monumental, narrative charcoal drawings. Although these drawings still play a prominent role in his work, Van de Velde evolves increasingly towards a ?total artist?, creating a tension between fiction and reality by the use of different media. This exhibition is Van de Velde?s first Belgian exhibition after his successful expo at the S.M.A.K. in 2016. Instead of relying on his previous success, Van de Velde wishes to walk new ways and to experiment with forms, compositions, styles and content. Here, Van de Velde creates his own universe by means of drawings, sculptures, decorative elements and ceramics. He was inspired by ?Prisoners of the Sun?, a volume of The Adventures of Tintin, the comics series by Belgian cartoonist Herg . The simple plot and the surrealist compositions of this adventure story serve as the basis for a fragmentary interpretation in which one of the artist?s alter egos, the abstract expressionist artist Robert Rino, is being kidnapped by a collector. While the artist is forced to produce work, his two assistants are trying to rescue him. Van de Velde?s work blends reality and fantasy, creating a complex world in which documentation and fiction, reproduction and reconstruction intrinsically tie together. ‎

‎Henry van de Velde (1863?1957) is considered one of the pioneers of modern architecture: he is world-famous for his beautiful buildings, furniture, utensils and typographical creations. Van de Velde, however, is much less well-known as a painter and draughtsman. Nevertheless, he had a lot of talent, especially as a draughtsman: his drawings bear witness to great originality and sincerity. Ten years after his training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp from 1880 to 1883, Van de Velde exchanged painting for the applied arts and architecture, fields in which he would build a brilliant career. His enormous output in the architectural field ensures that there is little interest in his painting work ? that attention only comes much later. Most of Van de Velde's pencil drawings and pastels were made in Wechelderzande ? a small village in the Kempen ?, in Kalmthout and in Knokke-Heist. He also drew landscapes in Weimar and South Tyrol. ‎Tim Van Laere Gallery presents A Life in A Day, Rinus Van de Velde's seventh solo exhibition at the gallery. In this exhibition, the artist not only presents new drawings in oil pastel, colored pencil, and charcoal but also premieres his third film, A Life in A Day, along with a selection of sculptures featured in the film.. Rinus Van de Velde's oeuvre reads like a multiverse, in which different storylines always run parallel to one another. He has already created several alter egos that allow him to appropriate different personas and explore worlds that do not (yet) belong to him. Throughout these different worlds, the constant anchor point is the artist himself. Through impersonations, constructed lies, and appropriations, he comes closer to uncovering the truth about his own identity and artistry. His latest film also mirrors this process. In his debut film, The Villagers, Van de Velde started from a predefined narrative, in which the artist himself played a small role as spectator. That narrative already evolved into a more abstract form in his second film, La Ruta Natural. For this film, the artist had a mask made in his likeness allowing one of his assistants to embody the artist?s role. This allowed Van de Velde to observe himself from a distance and portray and analyze his artistry. This same mask reappears in A Life in A Day. While La Ruta Natural?s storyline focused on the creation and destruction of his various alter egos, A Life in A Day delves into Van de Velde's artistry in a more intimate and pure way, inviting us to partake in the artist's inner process. The film opens with a very mundane scene where the artist wakes up, gets dressed, and then walks out the door with his briefcase to start his day. The motif of the briefcase plays an important role here as the depiction of a bundle of thoughts, ideas, and visualizations. It also plays an important role in the encounter between the artist and his gallerist Tim Van Laere, with the briefcase symbolising the dialogue between the two figures. After his daily activities, the artist then enters his imaginary universe, where he walks into a natural scenery. Here, in his solitude, the artist finds a moment of peace and takes his place like a pleinairist to create new work. This desire is visible in the oil pastel drawings in the first space of the exhibition, where the majority focuses on natural landscapes. Then he takes a shortcut to an underground, deeply hidden space, where we find the artist's inner vault. Within this archive, the artist meticulously organizes all his ideas, thoughts, images, and texts. This process of exploration, deepening, appropriating, and reinventing also resonates within the exhibition, where charcoal, oil pastel, colored pencil drawings, and sculptures are showcased. All of these works speak volumes about the artist: about his ambitions, doubts, concerns, his moments of happiness, but also of loneliness, frustration, and sadness. The predominance of the artist's personal voice in all his works makes it possible for him to appropriate any style, without losing his own identity in it. ‎Henry Van de Velde (1863-1957) werd wellicht het bekendst als architect van de boekentoren te Gent. ‎KUNSTMUSEUM LUZERN Rinus Van de Velde has made remarkable strides in recent years in the development of his oeuvre. Best known for his large-scale charcoal drawings at the start of his career, he now positions himself as a total artist, using a range of different media and forms of expression such as drawing, sculpture, installations and film. Initially, Van de Velde used found photographs and images as a basis for his drawings, but he later went in search of ways of exercising more control over the images. He achieved this through an extensive process of scene-building, in which he cast himself and those around him in different roles and characters in order to fit them into the narrative discourse of his fictional autobiography. These scenes were built up life-size, with even the tiniest detail being reproduced in wood and cardboard. This book focuses on this part of his artistic activity and has been produced to mark the eponymous solo show in Kunstmuseum Luzern in Switzerland. ‎De Antwerpse poesjenel is een bastaardkind van de Italiaanse Pulcinella. Wannes Van de Velde leerde als kind de ongekunstelde en scabreuze houten poppen kennen in de kelders van de Repenstraat en Stoofstraat. De figuur van de Neus legde de basis van zijn eerste lied, geschreven uit boosheid om de afbraak van zestiende-eeuwse huizen in zijn wijk. Karel Vingerhoets liet zich onderdompelen in het oeuvre van Wannes en schreef in opdracht De Neus in het Mas, waarin de Neus ons met zijn amoureuze en geestige ziel meeneemt langs de straten en klanken van zijn gedroomde stad. ‎Tim Van Laere Gallery volgt de filosofie van een artist?s gallery, waar het faciliteren en begeleiden van kunstenaars op de eerste plaats staat. Over de jaren heeft Tim Van Laere, samen zijn director Elke Segers en het TVLG team, een sterk programma uitgebouwd met een reeks memorabele solotentoonstellingen. Naarmate de ambities van de galerie en haar kunstenaars groeiden, werd het steeds voelbaarder dat de ruimte in de Verlatstraat niet meer voldeed om mee te groeien met de evolutie van de kunstenaars. Tim Van Laere droomde al langer van een eigen galerie te bouwen als losstaand paviljoen dat helemaal op maat van de kunst werd ontworpen. Die droom wist hij waar te maken via de samenwerking met OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen en projectontwikkelaar Triple Living op Nieuw Zuid. De galerie opende met de tentoonstelling KUNST KUNST KUNST, een groepstentoonstelling waarbij Adrian Ghenie, Jonathan Meese en Rinus Van de Velde met elkaars visie werden geconfronteerd. Original photograph portrait of Henry van de Velde, signed in pencil by the photographer, size 22,5 x 16,5 cm, added are two holograph letters by Henry van de Velde addressed to the photographer and dated Oct. 20th (19)43 and Nov. 22nd (19)43. Letters of 2 pp, written on paper with the printed footer of '' la nouvelle maison'', 1 avenue albert, tervueren. From the letters we can deduce that the the portrait was taken on Tuesday 12th October and that 5 different poses were taken, of which van de Velde preferred the third. (We can't be sure that our portrait is the third, but the fact that the letters remained with this photograph makes this very likely). The architect , being just over 80 years old , sits in a three-quater pose with his hands folded in his lap. His left arm shows prominently a large black lozenge stiched to his jacket, mourning attire for his wife Maria Sèthe, who died the previous year. In the two letters the architect thanks the photographer and states that he is very pleased with it, he also writes about his publications of which he sends one to the photographer. Alfons van Uffelen (1895 - 1983) started as picturalist, follower of e.g. Misonne, he became professor at the School of Photography of the Gevaert Company (later Agfa-Gevaert). A large part of his studio was sold in auction in Paris Drouot May 25th year 2000. As far as we could verify this photograph was not included in the sale.‎

‎Naast de Gentse universiteitsbibliotheek werkte architect Henry van de Velde in de jaren 1930 aan nog een ander belangrijk Oost-Vlaams ensemble: de Polikliniek voor Inwendige Ziekten en Villa Landing voor Dr. Adriaan Martens in Astene (Deinze). Als pionier specialist in inwendige ziekten en dieetleer was dokter Adriaan Martens destijds een bekend figuur in de medische en politieke wereld. Dr. Martens kocht het perceel van beeldhouwer George Minne, en gaf architect Henry van de Velde, kort na hun eerste ontmoeting in 1931 de opdracht voor het ontwerp van een woonhuis en een polikliniek aan weerszijden van de Emiel Clauslaan in Astene (Deinze). De bouwwerkzaamheden waren klaar in 1934, respectievelijk 1935. Hoewel beide gebouwen op het eerste gezicht van elkaar afwijken door de verschillende materialen, kunnen er toch enkele opvallende parallelen getrokken worden. Met hun plastische volumes, de grote afgeronde hoeken, typische baksteenoppervlaktes en goed uitgedachte integratie in het omgevende Leielandschap zijn zowel de kliniek als de villa typische exponenten van Henry van de Velde's tweede Belgische periode (1926-1948). Dit boek focust zowel op de originele materialen en kleurenschema's van de architect, maar ook op de interieurdecoratie en kunstcollectie in zowel de polikliniek en Villa Landing. Daarnaast wordt ook stilgestaan bij de erfgoedwaarde van beide gebouwen.‎

Both covers contains a woodcut illustration by his friend, the great Art Nouveau designer and architect Henry Van de Velde. These illustrations rank among the first designs by Van de Velde and represent one of the first deliberately asymmetrical typographical layouts in the history of book design (see e.g. cat. item 79 in the Rice University, Houston TX, exhibition catalogue ''Art Nouveau Belgium France'', 1976.). This copy bound by the outstanding French master bookbinder Pierre-Lucien Martin (1913-1985) in half morocco with a matching case.‎
