In-8 de (36) ff. (A-I4) dont 1 titre gravé dans une bordure, gothique à longues lignes, 12 gravures sur bois à pleine page, ptes. déchirures à 3 ff. sans manque, pte. restauration dans la partie supérieure du f. B3. Maroquin brun janséniste, dos lisse avec le titre doré en long, filet doré sur les coupes, triple filet doré intérieur, tranches dorées. Gruel. 162 x 113 mm.
Rare édition de l’Ars Moriendi « Art de bien vivre et de bien mourir » illustré de xylographies, petit livre de piété dont on ignore l’auteur et la date de composition, et dont il y eut plusieurs traductions. Dutuit, Livres xylographiques, I, p.62 ; Graesse, Trésor de Livres rares, 47 ; Brunet, I, 512 ; Baudrier, XI, 516-517 et 512 ; Pogue, Jacques Moderne, n°67. Guillaume Tardif, lecteur de Charles VIII, fut, selon Émile Mâle, l’auteur de cette libre traduction du texte des anciennes éditions xylographiques, dans laquelle le latin concis et obscur est « traduit, expliqué, développé par un véritable écrivain qui parle une langue grave et un français déjà classique ». Les premiers exemplaires de « l’Ars Moriendi » illustré apparaissent vers la moitié du XVe siècle avec des xylographies d’une efficacité tellement dramatique qu’elles ont contribué, à elles seules, beaucoup plus que le texte, à la diffusion très importante du petit livre : chaque image est placée en regard du texte, et illustre tour à tour la tentation du diable et la bonne inspiration de l’ange agonisant. Au fil des décennies (une des dernières éditions est de 1538), l’Ars devient un genre littéraire, et cependant il tend à se cristalliser, tandis que les illustrations deviennent de plus en plus grossières et se simplifient au maximum ; toutefois quelques thèmes du drame qui se déroule dans l’âme du fidèle au moment du trépas, représentés par l’ars moriendi, sont accueillis dans les traités contemporains sur les « novissima », lesquels, outre les thèmes, qui sont propres à l’Ars, en contiennent d’autres (Ubi sunt, de la description de l’agonie, etc.). L’esprit et la substance des artes moriendi passèrent aussi dans bien d’autres livres de piété, et il survécut quelque chose d’eux dans les innombrables exhortations aux malades et aux moribonds qui furent publiées, surtout en France, au cours du XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. Cette curieuse édition contient en plus de « l’Ars moriendi » « les Dix et les Cinq commandements » et « les Fantaisies du monde », de Guillaume Alexis. L’iconographie saisissante comprend 12 grands bois à pleine page, reprenant les bois primitifs du maître de « l’Ars moriendi » de Jean Siber, reproduits par Claudin III, 210 à 212 et 445, 446 et Baudrier, XI, 512. Deux petits bois représentent Moïse sur le feuillet de titre et la Crucifixion. Précieux volume provenant de la bibliothèque Edmée Maus, avec ex libris. Il fut catalogué il y a 42 ans au prix considérable de 42 500 F (7 000 €) (cat. 39, 1973, n°9) par Georges Heilbrun.

The Ars demonstrativa was the second version of the Lullian Ars, and revised and completed the Ars compendiosa inveniendi veritatem (1274). It was composed in Montpellier in 1283. The work is accompanied by Figures and an Alphabet; the former are graphic symbols which make the structural components of the Ars visible and facilitate the operation of the combinatorial mechanisms and the calculations. As regards the Alphabet, the letters A S T V X Y and Z represent the Figures mentioned above, while the others - namely those between B and R - serve to designate the concepts contained within Figure S, the figure pertaining to the rational soul. The Ars demonstrativa has four parts or 'distinctions'of which the final part is a list of questions relating to the preceding parts, accompanied by their corresponding solutions in symbolic notation. The first distinction gives a detailed description of the figures. The second distinction expounds the 'conditions' of the Ars, the mechanisms which enable the reader to obtain information on the basis of the principles from Figures A V X, with a view to discovering the truth or falsity - Figures Y Z - by using Figures T and S, which establish relationships between the principles. The third distinction offers sixteen modes, or rather, applications for the mechanisms of the Ars, which are: remembering, understanding, loving, believing, contemplating, finding, ordering, preaching, expounding, resolving, judging, showing, disputing, advising, accustoming, curing. Ramon Llull completed the Ars breuis in 1308. This short but very popular work extant in over seventy manuscripts was a concise and much more easily digestible version of the much longer Ars generalis ultima, the final redaction of Llull's Art. In Senigallia in the March of Ancona in July or August 1474, the Ars breuis was translated into Hebrew and then copied twice over the next couple of years. The colophon of the extant copy shows that these Jewish students of the Ars breuis used the work to attain unio mystica. This seems to be a unique example of a Christian work, described as being 'short in quantity but great in quality', knowingly being used by Jews for mystical purposes. The translator and copyists seem to have read and understood Llull's work through the prism of Abulafian Kabbalah. Abraham Abulafia (d. ca. 1291), a contemporary of Llull's, wrote numerous works dealing with the divine names and the combination of letters. He believed that the whole Torah was the names of God, and by manipulating the letters of the Hebrew alphabet, one could have knowledge of the divine and created world. This Jewish circle seemed to have understood the letters of the Lullian alphabet and the various combinations and compartments of the Ars breuis as leading to true mystical cognition. This volume presents the Hebrew edition together with the original Latin (based on a slightly revised edition of ROL 12 / CC CM 38) along with an English translation and detailed notes which show how the Jewish translator and copyists understood and used this work.
