Complete with the engaved frontispiece-portrait and the three engraved plates, including the large folded map of the "Underworld". Scattered brownspots. First edition of this influential utopian masterpiece. <br>The satirical piece of science fiction by the "father of Danish Literature", the famous Danish professor of Law and Philosophy, Ludvig Holberg, can be compared in style and setup to Swift's "Gulliver's Travels", which was published 15 years earlier. The sharp political satire is not bound to a specific nation, but to the entire human race, and thus gives a picture of human conditions and thought in general in this period. Though the work does not bear a title which directly indicates its obvious utopian connections, as does for instance More's "Utopia", the name of the land of the living trees, in which Niels Klim arrives, "Potu", is very likely to constitute a word game indicating it's obvious literary intention: Spelled backwards we get: "UTOP". <br>The quaint creatures and societies that Niels Klim meets in the underworld are said to be comparable to the characterization he gives in his Epistles (III) of the different European peoples, and thus we find satirical examples of the English mixed with the Dutch (in Potu) and the French mixed with the Germans (in Martinia). A bit of tear and wear to extremities and spine of the fragile wrappers, but overall well-preserved. First two leaves of the entire volume (not the Krisis-article) with light brown patches. [Entire volume: 442 pp.]. The very rare first printing of the first appearance of the first printed part (the only part to appear within his life-time) of Husserl's seminal work in which he develops his path-breaking project of linking the basic notions of science back to their conceptual roots in the pre-scientific parts of the "life-world". The work constitutes the last great work of the most important philosopher of the 20th century, the principal founder of phenomenology. <br><br>In "Krisis", Husserl considers the pervasive sense of crisis in European culture, while attempting to give the last in a long line of introductions by him to the method of phenomenological research which he had founded. <br><br>"Krisis" develops themes which are found in earlier works by Husserl, most importantly, the question of the constitution of intersubjectivity in the Cartesian Meditations (1929). However, a great interest of the work lies in its inflexion of the phenomenological methodology. Husserl, a mathematician by education, had articulated phenomenology as a rigorous science, on the ideals of 19th century rationalism. This understanding of the role of science and of philosophy permeates his earlier research which, while also treating social and historical phenomena, always does so from the vantage point of individual consciousness. <br><br>In "Krisis", Husserl cuts the umbilical cord to individual consciousness. We find him engaged in what he describes as a "teleological-historical reflection upon the origins of our critical scientific and philosophical situation". This reflection revolves around the concept of "life-world" (Lebenswelt) which Husserl introduces as the designation of the pre-theoretical and unreflected element, out of which scientific thought arises. Husserl attributes the alienation of man in Europe to the fact that the sciences have forgotten that they are rooted in the "life-world". The concept has since played a pivotal role in the theory of communicative action of Jürgen Habermas. <br><br>Krisis is the last work of the most influential philosopher of the 20th century. As such, it is an essential for anybody with an interest in phenomenology, the dominant non-analytic strain of philosophical reflection in the 20th century. At the same time, it represents something as exceptional as the radicalization of an entire life's work which opens up to entire new perspectives. It translates Husserl's sense of the growing malaise and restlessness in European culture, of which he himself was a victim since the Nazi take-over of power in Germany in 1933. But it is also a reply to the then increasingly successful existentialist philosophies of Martin Heidegger and Karl Jaspers, in whose work Husserl saw a travesty of his own philosophy and a threat to the foundation of European culture. In this sense, it is the last element in what is one of the most fruitful direct dialogues in the history of philosophy, the dialogue between Husserl and his former assistant Heidegger. <br><br>The last of "The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology" only appeared posthumously, in 1954.‎

First edition of a work which is a breakthrough in the theory of "First Order Partial Differential Equations", generalizing the method of variation of parameters for solving differential equations. " The oldest theory of integration of partial differential equations of the first order are due to Lagrange; it is based on the fundamental fact that the most general solution of such differential equations can be calculated with the help of differentiations and eliminations if a complete integral of the differential equationn is known" - "This problem (of partial differential equations) had only been lightly touched on by Clairaut, Euler, d'Alembert, and Condorcet. Lagrange wrote: "Finally I have just read a memoir that Mr de Laplace presented recently.....This reading aweakened old ideas that I had on the same subject and resulted in the following investigations...(which constitute) a new and complete theory." Laplace wrote on 3 February 1778 that he considered Lagrange's essay "a masterpiece of analysis, by the importence of the subject, by the beauty of method, and by the elegant manner in which it is represented." ‎(Napoli, 1768). Folio. Bound uncut in a magnificent recent sprinkled full calf pastiche-binding with seven raised bands, forming eight compartments. Two leather title-labels to spine and compartments and raised bands with gilt ornamentation. All edges of boards with blindstamped decorations. One text leaf (unnumbered, but no. 38) with small stain and one diagram with tiny hole measureing 1 cm2, both far from affecting text/plate, very light soiling to first two leaves. All in all a very fine, clean an attractive copy. Complete with 39 ff of text [Italian and Latin in parallel columns], 69 plates of views and diagrams of which three are double page and one folded, a beautiful panorama depicting the Bay of Pozzuoli ('Veduta della Costa di Pozzuoli'). The rare first edition of Paoli's masterpiece of 18th century Italian chalcography with both text and views in beautiful copper engraved plates. The systematic documentation of classical ancient Greek and Roman ruins, many of which are here depicted for the very first time, is considered the most important eighteenth century views of Pozzuoli and its surroundings. <br><br>The engravings are by Giovanni Volpato, Antoine Cardon, Francesco La Marra, and Johann Dominik Fiorillo based on drawings by local artists such as Gianbattista Natali, Tommaso Rojola, Ricciarelli and Magri. Conte Felice Gazzola commissioned the present work and when published, it was printed in very few copies only and sold for 15 Neapolitan ducats. A second edition in folio-oblong was printed in 1769.<br><br>Pozzuoli, located just north of Naples, began as a Greek colony and a Roman colony was established in 194 BC. Pozzuoli (at the time named Puteoli) was the great emporium for the Alexandrian grain ships and other ships from all over the Roman world. It was also the main hub for goods exported from Campania, including blown glass, mosaics, wrought iron, and marble. The Roman naval base at nearby Misenum housed the largest naval fleet in the ancient world. It was also the site of the Roman Dictator Sulla's country villa and the place where he died in 78 BC - the ruins of many of these sights are portrayed in the present work. <br><br>Paolo Antonio Paoli, president of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome (1775-98), was a pioneering scholar and historian of the ancient civilizations of the region of Campania in southern Italy. <br><br>Cicognara 2692 (erroneously dated 1778)<br>Graesse I, 146 <br>Brunet I, 314‎

‎Frankfurt, Kaufmann, 1921. Royal 8vo. Original half cloth binding with the illustrated and printed cardboard-boards. Hinges weak, internally and externally, and cloth here a bit torn. Overall a very good copy of of this very fragile original binding (the cloth is very thin and fragile and usually totally ruined, making the work quite scarce in the original binding - which has the David Star on the front board). Internally very nice and clean. 532 pp - 2 leaves of advertisement. The uncommon, and in original binding fairly scarce, first edition of this overlooked masterpiece by one of the most significant Jewish philosophers of the 20th century. The work should rightfully be considered one of the most important philosophical productions of the 20th century and ought to rank with Heidegger's "Sein und Zeit". <br><br>The work, which Rosenzweig wrote while in the trenches of the First World War, is the attempt to articulate the place of man in Creation. In Rosenzweig's dense prose, various strains come together and are reconciled: Judaism and Christianity, on the one hand, and German idealism and nascent existentialism, on the other.<br><br>This grandiose synthesis both builds on and distances itself from RosenzweigŽs doctoral dissertation on HegelŽs concept of the state, which still ranks among the most significant 20th century contributions to the literature on Hegel. By its ambition of going beyond the format of academic philosophy to embrace the reality of human existence, Der Stern der Erlösung could be compared to Sein und Zeit, Martin Heidegger's first major work which was published in the same year. And it is exactly the towering influence of Heidegger on 20th century philosophy that has overshadowed Rosenzweig's work, which has, however, only gained in prominence in recent years, especially through the writings of Emmanuel Levinas, on whom Rosenzweig was a major influence.<br><br>"Der Stern der Erlösung" is usually labeled a work of Jewish philosophy, and Rosenzweig is rightly considered along with Emmanuel Levinas and Martin Buber, his close friend and collaborator, as one of the most significant Jewish philosophers of the 20th century. However, his scope and vision transcend parochial boundaries and should, as we develop a more considered perspective on the last century, earn "Der Stern der Erlösung" a place among its most important works of philosophy.‎

Rare second latin edition of Savonarola's perhaps most famous and influential work, his spiritual masterpiece, essentially a celebration of the victory of the Cross over sin and death and an exploration of what it means to be a Christian. <br>On 12 May 1497, Pope Alexander VI excommunicated Savonarola and threatened the Florentines with an interdict if they persisted in harbouring him. On 18 March 1498, after much debate and steady pressure from the government, he withdrew from public preaching. Under the stress of excommunication, Savonarola composed the present work. <br><br>"In his religious treatise, The Triumph of the Cross, Savonarola draws on classical triumphal imagery and the tradition of Florentine pageantry, as he allegorically depicts the triumph of Christianity in the form of a triumphal procession. Since it is difficult for the human mind to imagine the supernatural and invisible works of Christ, the friar argues, they need to be presented and visualized in metaphorical form. The image of the triumphal chariot serves this purpose well."
