‎Album with visiting-cards from the 1780’s. / Album mit Visitenkarten aus dem 18. Jahrhundert.‎

‎Contemporary Boards. 8vo; 100 numbered leaves with 202 mounted visiting cards. - 82 cards have autograph signatures of their owners, on 33 the name of the card-holder is printed and further 87 cards have no name on it. — Visiting cards became popular at the beginning of the 18th century in Italy, around 1730 in France and later in all over Europe. In 18th century Europe, the footmen of aristocrats and royalty would deliver these first European visiting cards to the servants of their prospective hosts solemnly introducing the arrival of their owners. Visiting cards became an indispensable tool of etiquette, with sophisticated rules governing their use. The essential convention was that one person would not expect to see another person in his own home (unless invited or introduced) without first leaving his visiting card for the person at his home. Upon leaving the card, he would not expect to be admitted at first, but might receive a card at his own home in response. This would serve as a signal that a personal visit and meeting at home would be welcome. On the other hand, if no card was forthcoming, or if a card was sent in an envelope, a personal visit was thereby discouraged. This album contains cards of (Karl Anselm) von Thurn und Taxis (1733-1805); Principe di Marsiconuovo; (Giovanni) Marchese de Serpos; (Miguel de Torres Ruiz) Marquis de Matallan (1737-1817); (Erbeto) Mirelli of Malta; (John) Irwin (1728-1788); his wife (Caroline) Irwin (*1750); Capitano di Marina Agostino del Bene; Giuseppe Gualengo; Monsieur de Campos; Le President du Roi de Sardaigne; Le Ministre Plenipotentaire de sa Majeste Tres-Fidele; l’Abbé de la Feuillie; Marchese della Giummarella; General Comte d’Alet; Marquis Manara (Ministre); Le Comte F. de Cattaneo (Consul General); Cavalieri Rombenchi Incaricato de Reali affari di Napoli; Mr. de Fillie – Consul General de Russie; Giuseppe Firrao (Cardinal, 1736-1830); Filippo Armano; Prince (Peter) Obulensky (1743-1822) of Russia; Francesco Aglietti (1757-1836); Abbe Comte de Montalban; Franco di Montalban; (Pierre Paul de Meredieu) Baron de Naillac (1737-c1813); Constantin Zacco; Bardaxi Secretaire di Legazione di Spagne; (Leonardo) de Miniscalchi – Chevalier de Malta; Minister of Poland; Ministre plénipotentiaire of Russia; Ambassador of Spain; Aurelio Dadini; Pietro Paolo Donati; Chevalier (William?) ‎Bruch, Hans und Margarete Bruch:‎

Reference : 98390

(1912)

‎Märchenritt! Wer kommt mit?‎

‎Large-Folio [440 x 364 mm]. 16 pages. With numerous watercolor drawings. The siblings Hans (1887-1913) and Margarete (1882-1963) were the children of the German composer Max Bruch (1838-1920). This childrens book was the only common work, since Hans died of blood poisoning even before publication in the year 1919. Richard Grimm-Sachsenberg (1873-1952), painter and graphic artist in Leipzig, completed the work on the manuscript, whose fairytale paintings Hans had already left ready for publishing. Margarete Bruch was a German writer. In 1910, she published her first book of poetry. Hans Bruch was a German painter and draughtsman. He was a pupil of Lovis Corinth and received several awards at a young age. He created most of his work in the small German town Schwalenberg. The arrangement of the drawings and stories in the print version are identical to that of the manuscript, except for one sheet. The story "Drei Waldvöglein" and the accompanying drawing have been displaced and the originally colored drawing was reproduced in black and white. Furthermore, the print version of the book has been reduced in format by about 50 percent. - The manuscript cover page is slightly rubbed and has some marginal blemishes outside the picture, the other panels are partly slightly stained. Attached is Margaretes copy of the book edition with her handwritten property notation. Bibliography: Petra Budke and Jutta Schulze - Schriftstellerinnen in Berlin 1871 bis 1945. Berlin, 1995. Orlanda, Recklinghausen 1995.‎

‎c. 180 x 188 mm; Hand-coloured etching. Slightly stained. c. 1800 (n.d.) Very rare anamorphose depicting two musicians, one playing the violin, the other one playing another instrument with strings, possibly a mandolin. The anamorphose shows the figures stretched to a semi-circle, with in its centre a small circle. When a metal cylindrical mirror is placed on this central circle, the reflected image will show the figures correctly. The anamorphose has a printed number in a corner (7), so it probably comes from a set of more anamorphoses. An almost identical anamorphose of the two musicians was published by Johann Michael Burucker from Nuremberg. (c.f. Füsslin/Hentze p. 65).‎
