‎Splendid incunable in the vernacular, illustrated with 180 vignettes in the text. This is the first edition of the biography and epistles of Saint Jerome. Lorenzo de Rossi, one the most celebrated printers of the Quattrocento, was born in Valenza Po (Alessandria), but settled in Ferrara in the mid-eighties, working there until 1497. Two dedications to the Este family suggest a direct involvement in the financing of the work, but for which no firm evidence remains.Considered as one of the finest incunables ever printed during the Italian renaissance, the biography and epistles of Saint Jerome is illustrated by 180 beautiful wood-engraved vignettes. The text, printed on two columns with an elegant roman type, is decorated with large ornamented initials, six lines tall. The tittle page features a woodcut representing the birth of Saint Jerome, surrounded by a large engraved architectural frame with allegorical figures.RARE SPECIMEN — one of the very few complete with the full biography of the Saint, which is usually lacking in other copies, including that of the of the Pierpont Morgan Library. Good copy, with generous margins. Restauration to the top margins and minute tears in the margins of a few leaves, minor adjustments to some words of leaves 266-68. New endpapers.Martini 191. Kristeller, p. 147. BMC, VI, 614. IGI, 4746. Goff, H-178. Sander, 3404 ‎

Martini 191. Kristeller, p. 147. BMC, VI, 614. IGI, 4746. Goff, H-178. Sander, 3404 ‎
