‎Paris, Grang & Didot, 1770 & 1783. 365, [iii] for Ailhaud; 476, [iv] for the Journal pp. 12mo (10,5 x 17,5 cm.). Contemporary half calf, gilt lettered on red & black morocco label (joints worn; some rubbing, top of spine slightly damaged).‎

‎A rare ensemble. Ailhaud, the greatest of all French quackers, became famous for his "Poudre". He established selling points in the major cities of France and Germany and gained a fortune with his patented "poudre". According to Jourdan, the nostrum was composed from resin, soot, and scammony. Ailhaud powders are said to have destroyed as many people as Napoleon's campaigns. After Ailhaud's dead, the quackery was successfully continued by his son Jean-Gaspard. --(The title page of Ailhaud has a small hole, not affecting the text; else some scattered light staining or foxing).‎

‎The second, much expanded, edition of Alibert's thesis, the founder of the modern French school of dermatology. A 5th. edition was published in 1819. Bayle/Thilay II, 935. "La Thse inaugurale d'Alibert sur les 'Fivres intermittentes perniceuses' eur un grand retentissement. Revue et complte, elle obtint jusqu'a cinq ditions successives' (Dechambre). The first edition was published in 1800 and has only 159 pages and 1 plate.‎
