(Mendelssohn).Samuel Daniell (1775-1811) est un peintre et un dessinateur anglais qui arriva en Afrique du Sud le 9 décembre 1799. Il fut nommé secrétaire et artiste de l'expédition de 1801-1802 ralliant le Cap de Bonne-Espérance au Bechuanaland, menée par P.J. Truter et William Somerville. De retour en Angleterre, Daniell publia Paysages et animaux africains (1804-1805) grâce au soutien de son oncle le peintre Thomas Daniell et de son frère, le peintre et graveur William Daniell. Il partit ensuite pour Ceylan (l'actuel Sri Lanka), où il fit des esquisses de paysages et de personnes avant de mourir de la fièvre tropicale. Les textes accompagnant chaque illustration sont de Somerville et de Sir John Barrow, un géographe et explorateur britannique qui participa lui aussi aux premières expéditions britanniques en Afrique du Sud. Samuel Daniell dessinait des animaux dans leur habitat naturel, et son travail était apprécié pour la précision et l'attention portée aux détails. Le recueil comporte également des croquis de personnes rencontrées au cours de l'expédition et plusieurs paysages saisissants.Thomas Sutton écrit à propos du présent ouvrage: 'The coloured plates represent local scenery, animals singly or in groups in their natural surroundings, native types, and views of kraals' (p.107). Il poursuit: 'It may safely be said that never before had drawings of animals been presented so beautifully in their natural scenery. Particularly fine are the plates of the gnu, springbok, and the hippopotamus. The landscapes are equally fine, those of Sitsikamma, with the interlacing jungle trees and elephants watering, the Hottentot Kraal, and the Korah Hottentot Village being lovely things. Apart from these, such plates as the Halt of a Boor's Family and Boors returning from Hunting are valuable records of early itinerant life in South Africa ... [Dans cet ouvrage, Samuel Daniell] shows full control over his medium: his freshness of approach is apparent; his composition and colour are full of beauty; his animals are delicately drawn, his figure-studies full of life and sincerity and warmth' (pp.107 -111).”“Mr. Daniell embarked for the Cape of Good Hope, whence, after some stay, he passed into the interior of Africa, collecting much valuable information on his way, and making drawings of all the objects worthy of attention, even while continually assailed by hardships, and exposed to danger in very various shapes. In this journey Mr. Daniell was accompanied by two other scientific travelers; and this small party succeeded in penetrating further to the North-East than any Europeans had previously reached in the same direction. Of these drawings many have been engraved and given to the world in his publication entitled ‘African Scenery’, a work which, for design and execution, as well as novelty and variety of materials, has obtained very distinguished approbation. In 1836 (in a paper in the Transactions, also addressed to Faraday with the title ""On Voltaic Combinations""), he announced his invention of the battery. In his second paper, the paper offered here, he further develops his invention. In the new invention by Charles Wheatstone of the electric telegraph in 1837, the Daniell cell was used as the electric source.In 1831 Daniell was appointed proffesor of Chemistry at King's College London. He invented several scientific instruments, including a hygrometer for measuring humidity he is best known for his work in electrochemistry, his interests having been aroused by the work of his good friend faraday. Volta's battery had the defect of rapid diminution in current. What was needed, however, was a battery yielding a constant current over a considerable lenght of time. In 1836 Daniell succeeded, producing the Daniell cell, of copper and zinc. his was the first reliable source of electric current.‎

‎Edition originale de ce très bel ouvrage illustré sur la Chine et l’Inde à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Brunet, II, 489 ; Graesse, Trésor de livres rares, II, 326 ; Abbey, Travel, 516 ; Lipperheide 1523 ; Colas 797 ; Tooley 173 ; Cordier, Sinica, 2107.Le présent ouvrage parut sous formes de 10 livraisons illustrées de 5 planches chacune.Il illustre le long voyage entrepris par Thomas Daniell (1749-1840), un peintre paysagiste anglais, et son neveu William Daniell (1769-1837) en Chine et en Inde. Les Daniell quittèrent l’Angleterre en avril 1785 à bord du navire Atlas, et arrivèrent à Whampoa, en Chine, en août. Après avoir passé plusieurs mois en Chine, les deux voyageurs reprirent la mer et gagnèrent Calcutta en 1786.Daniell passa près de 10 ans en Inde, et à son retour à Londres en 1795 il publia son ouvrage intitulé Oriental scenery.Le texte explicatif qui accompagne les planches donne des informations sur les populations locales rencontrées dans les différents pays visités.« Ce bel ouvrage renferme 50 planches coloriées, avec texte » (Brunet).La superbe illustration se compose de 50 planches gravées à l’aquatinte et coloriées à la main à l’époque montrant des vues de Madère, Java, Macao, Canton, le Cap de Bonne Espérance, la Malaisie, Calcutta, la Baie du Bengale, …Parmi ces 50 planches, 22 sont consacrées à la Chine, avec des vues de villes mais aussi des habitants dans leurs habits traditionnels. L’une des planches montre une scène de pêche au requin à Java.« Parmi ces planches qui représentent principalement des vues, 8 figurent des costumes chinois et 12 des habitants de Java. » (Colas) Bel exemplaire de ce beau livre de voyage en Asie conserve dans sa reliure française de l’époque en demi-maroquin vert orné.‎

‎Édition originale de la traduction française. L'illustration comprend 25 gravures sur acier hors-texte d'après William Daniell. Cette traduction fut décidée très vite après le lancement en Grande-Bretagne de la série de l'Oriental Annual et l'on s'efforça de tenir le rythme de cette publication. Livre à succès, donc, mais à la genèse singulière. Son auteur, Caunter, envoyé en Inde comme cadet, proclama n'y avoir rien trouvé qui eut pour lui de l'intérêt, avant de passer sa vie à écrire dessus! Il allait ainsi contribuer à un engouement aux conséquences on ne peut plus sérieuses: le dernier Moghol finalement déposé en 1857, dès l'année suivante l'East India Company passe le relai à la Couronne et, signe de l'importance symbolique prise par cette région, le point d'orgue de la période victorienne sera en 1876 la proclamation de la reine Victoria comme impératrice des Indes. L'ouvrage en France a été présenté plutôt comme l'œuvre de William Daniell, étant donné la notoriété dont jouissait, et jouit encore cet illustrateur qui découvrit l'Inde à quatorze ans, y ayant accompagné son oncle, le peintre Thomas Daniell Très bel exemplaire dans de décoratives reliures du temps. La gravure figurant en frontispice du premier volume est bien mentionnée dans les tables, mais y est rapportée au chapitre concernant le Qûtb Minâr. Des rousseurs. Remarquable exemplaire relié par Muller, ancien ouvrier de Thouvenin qui s'établi à son compte en 1830, en association avec Héring. A la mort de Joseph Thouvenin, dit l'aîné, en janvier 1834, il reprit seul l'atelier de ce dernier. Il n'eut pas le temps de se faire un nom à la mesure de ses qualités professionnelles, car il meurt en 1836. De toute beauté!
