Parisis, Georgium Iossé, MDCLXIV Roberto Bellarmino (ou Bellarmin) était un prêtre jésuite et cardinal de l'Église catholique romaine. Il est né le 4 octobre 1542 à Montepulciano, en Italie, et est décédé le 17 septembre 1621 à Rome. Bellarmino a été membre de la Compagnie de Jésus, également connue sous le nom de société de Jésus, et il est devenu l'un de ses membres les plus éminents et influents. Il a occupé plusieurs postes importants au sein de l'ordre, y compris celui de professeur de théologie à l'Université de Louvain, en Belgique. En tant que théologien et apologète, Bellarmino a joué un rôle majeur dans la Contre-Réforme catholique, qui était une réponse de l'Église catholique à la Réforme protestante. Il a défendu les positions de l'Église catholique contre les doctrines protestantes et a écrit plusieurs ouvrages théologiques et controversés. L'une de ses œuvres les plus célèbres est "Disputationes de controversiis christianae fidei adversus huius temporis haereticos" (ou "Disputations sur les controverses de la foi chrétienne contre les hérétiques de notre temps"), publiée entre 1581 et 1593. Cet ouvrage présente des arguments théologiques et polémiques pour défendre la doctrine catholique et réfuter les points de vue protestants. Bellarmino a été créé cardinal en 1599 par le pape Clément VIII et a occupé plusieurs fonctions importantes au sein de la Curie romaine. Il est également connu pour son implication dans le procès de Galilée, où il a joué un rôle dans la condamnation de Galilée pour ses théories astronomiques. La contribution de Bellarmino à la théologie, à la controverse religieuse et à la formation intellectuelle au sein de l'Église catholique a laissé une empreinte durable. Il a été canonisé en 1930 par le pape Pie XI et est vénéré comme saint dans l'Église catholique.‎
