‎"8. North Yorkshire, photography album by William Marshall , s.d. (ca. 1938-1948), oblong format, 28 x 38 cm, imitation leather album with a metal ring binding, contains 1 portrait of the photographer and 27 photographs ( 19 x 24 cm) mounted on stiff black board. The photographs have written captions in white ink. Finely preserved photo album which can be dated from the sparse motorcars on some pictures ; early Forties of the last century. The black/white photographs depict village views and landscapes in North Yorkshire ; Burnsall , Red Lion at Burnsall , Appletreewick with the New Inn, Gayle and geese at Gayle , Simon's seat , Hubberholme , Hubberholme bridge , The George Inn , Dent church , Fountains Abbey , Jervaulx Abbey , Bainbridge, Gordale Scar , [...]. The album opens with a portrait of the photographer and a note explaining that his widow Marion donated the album to a friend. The photographs have apart from their documentary interest also a definite pictorial charm."‎

‎En Mars 1850, James et Janet ont accueilli Charlotte Brontë, qui avait publié anonymement "Jane Eyre" seulement trois ans auparavant. Charlotte a visité à nouveau Gawthorpe Hall en Janvier 1855, seulement deux mois avant sa mort le 31 Mars, et son association avec Gawthorpe Hall fait de lui un arrêt populaire sur " l'Itineraire Brontë" à ce jour......L'histoire de Gawthorpe Hall semblait bouclée après la mort de Janet en 1872, quand son fils aîné, Ughtred Kay-Shuttleworth - du nom de son ancêtre du 14e siècle - a hérité les biens de sa mère. à l'époque victorienne, Ughtred vécu à Gawthorpe Hall avec sa femme et ses six enfants et a eu une carrière politique florissante qui l'a vu servir député libéral de Hastings de 1869 à 1880, et pour Clitheroe 1885-1902, quand il a été élevé à la pairie comme Baron Shuttleworth (1er Seigneur Shuttleworth) pour ses services politiques. Entre 1908 et 1928, il était lord lieutenant de Lancashire et ce est à ce titre qu'il a diverti le roi George V et la reine Mary à Gawthorpe Hall en 1913..... M.
