De schilderijen van Bert De Beul (?°1961, Gent) kunnen eigenlijk figuratief worden genoemd - we herkennen een gezicht, een brug, een huis - hoewel de beelden zich soms voor onze ogen lijken terug te trekken en oplossen in wazige kleurvlekken. Deze slingerbeweging tussen figuratie en abstractie wordt verklaard door het feit dat de kunstenaar niet de werkelijkheid zelf op het doek zet, maar zijn herinneringen en associaties. Die persoonlijke en subjectieve relatie tot het onderwerp veroorzaakt daarnaast een betekenisverschuiving: het concrete, bijna banale object wordt een spannend en geheimzinnig beeld. The paintings by Bert De Beul (?°1961, Gent) may actually be called figurative - we recognise a face, a bridge, a house - although the images sometimes seem to withdraw in front of our eyes and to dissolve into hazy coloured patches. This pendulum motion between figuration and abstraction is explained by the fact that the artist does not put reality as such on the canvas, but rather his memories and associations. Moreover, this personal and subjective relationship to the subject causes a shift in meaning: the concrete, almost banal object becomes a thrilling and mysterious image.

Opvallend aan zijn schilderwerken is het materiaalgebruik, zowel wat betreft de drager (meestal afgedankte objets trouves) als de schilders materie (meestal van industriele aard). Materiaal is dan ook een van de kernen waarrond zijn artistieke praktijk draait: het is ongewoon en negeert het keurslijf van de traditionele twee dimensies, maar veroorzaakt bovenal een zekere wrijving in het werk.

Cloaca is a series of art installations by Belgian artist Wim Delvoye. The installations are computerised machines that recreate the human digestive process. The machine takes in food which it moves through a series of pipes and containers where digestive processes are performed following which the machine excretes the digested material at a time advertised to gallery viewers. This digested material has both the look and smell of faeces. Each installation has its own name, logo and technical drawings.
