‎Illustré de 41 cartes géographiques en couleurs de Wim Delvoye. Edition originale. "Vers la fin des années 1980, Wim Delvoye peignit une série de cartes imaginaires renvoyant aux images didactiques qui décoraient, jusqu'à il y a peu, les murs des locaux de chaque école primaire. Lors de cours moins intéressants, il n'était pas difficile de laisser vagabonder son esprit. Les pays représentés sur ces cartes prenaient alors la forme d'un écureuil, d'une théière, d'un marteau ou d'une scie. A la demande du Fonds régional d'art contemporain des Pays-de-la-Loire à Nantes, toutes ces cartes furent réunies en juin 1999 dans une grande installation. Cependant, plutôt que d'accrocher ces quarante cartes aux murs, Wim Delvoye opta pour une synthèse de son oeuvre. Utilisant les méthodes les plus contemporaines offertes par la technologie moderne, il passa au scanner les cartes artisanales et les regroupa dans l'ordinateur sous la forme d'un monde imaginaire. Peintes au pistolet sur des toiles énormes, ces sept cartes des sept continents forment un environnement impressionnant où la réalité (fictive) et sa représentation (crédible) s'harmonisent à merveille. ‎ 1958, Hasselt. Cuyvers studeerde begin jaren tachtig af aan het Hoger Architectuurinstituut van de stad Gent. Na zijn studies werkte hij in de Verenigde Staten bij Preston Phillips en Venturi, Rauch & Scott Brown. Daarna was hij stagiair bij Paul Robbrecht en Hilde Daem. Hij bleef in de jaren 1990 met dit bureau occasioneel samenwerken. In 1984 startte hij een eigen bureau in Gent, waarin hij architectuuropdrachten en wedstrijddeelnames combineerde met studiewerk, onder meer over Sarajevo en over rustplaatsen op autowegen. Cuyvers tracht aan de hand van een rechtlijnige en strenge architectuur de gangbare sociale conventies vorm te geven. Hij verwijst hierbij graag naar de Belgische context. Hij ziet deze niet als een typisch historische of stedenbouwkundige situatie maar beschouwt deze eerder als een rijk geschakeerd collectief geheugen dat, mits de juiste architecturale ingrepen, ontsloten kan worden. In 1995 wijdde de Singel een eerste solotentoonstelling aan Wim Cuyvers. Hij doceerde aan de Nederlandse academies voor bouwkunst van Tilburg en Eindhoven, en aan Sint-Lucas in Gent. In 2000 vestigde hij zich in de Franse Jura. Hij is momenteel als adviserend onderzoeker verbonden aan de Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht. Laatst aangepast op 9/10/2007.‎

Het situeert het Belgische kunstgebeuren in een internationaal perspectief, waarbij vooral de bronnen van een bepaalde stroming aan bod komen. Elk hoofdstuk wordt afgesloten met de bespreking van een of meerdere Belgische kunstenaars. Deze commentaren zijn geen waarheden met de geldigheid van een gebruiksaanwijzing, maar voorbeelden van interpretaties. Een kunstwerk is immers een open teken waaraan de toeschouwer een eigen invulling kan geven. Deel II laat zich perfect lezen zonder de kennis van Deel I. Het is geen vervolgverhaal. ‎Voor de tentoonstelling Vrij belangrijke foto's hebben twee Hermans-kenners uit de bijna 15.000 foto's een selectie van tientallen foto's gemaakt, waarvan het merendeel niet eerder is getoond. Sommige foto's zijn zelfs door Hermans nooit gezien, omdat ze zijn gereproduceerd van negatieven die hij zelf niet afdrukte. In de tentoonstelling is een mix van vintages afdrukken en nieuwe prints te zien. De titel van de tentoonstelling verwijst naar Hermans' archief. In het mapje Vrij belangrijke foto's zat een bonte verzameling van 57 afdrukken: portretten van Hermans zelf, zijn ouders en andere familieleden, vrienden plus foto's van affiches, de Arc de Triomphe, huizen in Wenen en het geboortehuis van Nietzsche. *** Als afsluiting van het 'Hermansjaar' 2021-2022, waarin wordt gevierd dat de Nederlandse schrijver Willem Frederik Hermans honderd jaar geleden werd geboren, presenteert het Fotomuseum Den Haag een expositie ingericht met door hem gemaakte foto's. Gelijktijdig verschijnt Willem Frederik Hermans - Vrij belangrijke foto's met een verse selectie uit zijn fotografi sche oeuvre. Het boek en de tentoonstelling kwamen tot stand onder auspici n van het Willem Frederik Hermans Instituut en met in-stemming van de Erven Hermans. Het in principe gesloten archief-Hermans is daarvoor een malig opengesteld voor de gastconservatoren. In 1957, toen zijn roman De donkere kamer van Damokles niet wilde vlotten, heeft Hermans overwogen zich om te scholen tot fotograaf. Hij kocht een professionele camera, mat zich de firmanaam 'Persfotobedrijf W.F. Hermans' aan en ging in de leer bij Nico Jesse, van wie hij ook een oude Leica overnam. Daarmee sloeg hij fanatiek aan het fotograferen in Groningen, Amsterdam en Parijs. Uiteindelijk kreeg de Leica een sleutelrol in zijn roman. Piet Schreuders en Bram Oostveen bekeken alle 4.500 zwartwitfoto's en 9.829 kleurendia's in het archief-Hermans en maakten een selectie waarvan het merendeel niet eerder is gepubli ceerd. Sommige foto's zijn zelfs door Hermans nooit gezien, omdat ze zijn gereproduceerd van negatieven die hij zelf niet afdrukte. Met tekstbijdragen van Wim van Sinderen, conservator van het Fotomuseum Den Haag, Piet Schreuders en W.F. Hermans. In zijn inlei ding plaatst Wim van Sinderen W.F. Hermans in de traditie van de Nederlandse fotografie. Piet Schreuders geeft achtergrondinformatie over de gekozen foto's in het essay 'De verlegen fotograaf' en W.F. Hermans geeft een inkijk in zijn visie op fotografie. Bram Oostveen werkt bij het onderzoeksinstituut Huygens ING en was nauw betrokken bij de totstandkoming van de 24-delige Volledige Werken van Willem Frederik Hermans.‎
