Two folding hand coloured maps of the relevant parts of Africa.. The buckram is a little faded and rubbed to the edge. There is a little chipping to the head and tail of the spine with slight loss. A split to the board has been repaired. A closed tear to the half title page has been neatly repaired. The maps are in very nice clean condition. xxvii, 529. pp.‎

Colour illustrated title page and foreword for parents, with table of contents on verso. Boards are more recent but retain originals. The rear board is a little soiled. Olive green cloth spine. Inside some foxing, but doesn't spoil the book's appeal. Some marking to the page edges. Text in German. 72 pages. 320 x 240 mm (12œ x 9œ inches).‎

‎Stuttgart and Tübingen J. Cotta 1841 Première édition. Il y a eu plusieurs livres de la "Galerie Goethe", celui-ci est une très belle édition de poche. Les planches sont en demi-cuir et les titres et décorations sont dorés. Planches marbrées. En bon état, légèrement frotté. L'intérieur contient 40 planches gravées sur cuivre, y compris le titre. Chacune d'entre elles est accompagnée d'un protège-tissu. Dans l'ensemble, les planches sont en excellent état, avec juste un peu de rousseur. La plupart des planches sont de Kaulbach, mais on trouve aussi des uvres de Van Muyden, Muttenthaler, Bendel, et plusieurs graveurs ont été utilisés. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit d'un très bel exemple d'un ouvrage rare (nous n'avons pas trouvé d'autres exemplaires de cette édition). 15,5cm x 11,5cm.‎

‎First edition. There were several "Goethe Gallery" books, this is a rather lovely pocket edition. With half leather boards and gilt decoration and titles. Marbled boards. In good, slightly rubbed condition. The inside holds 40 engraved copper plates, including the title. Each has a tissue guard. On the whole the plates are in excellent condition, with just a touch of foxing. Most of the plates are by Kaulbach, but also included are works by Van Muyden, Muttenthaler, Bendel, A variety of engravers were used. Overall a very nice example of a scarce item (we can find no other copies of this edition available). 15.5cm x 11.5cm. ,‎

Il y a quelques rousseurs éparses par endroits, mais la plupart sont assez légères. Les planches photographiques ont été collées sur du carton. ‎Rare first publication of the traffic regulations of the then newly opned Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal, now known as the Kiel Canal (or Nord-Ostsee-Kanal). The canal was finished in 1895, but later widened, and links the North Sea at Brunsbüttel to the Baltic Sea at Kiel-Holtenau. An average of 250 nautical miles (460 km) is saved by using the Kiel Canal instead of going around the Jutland Peninsula. This not only saves time but also avoids storm-prone seas and having to pass through the Sound or Belts.The first connection between the North and Baltic Seas was constructed while the area was ruled by Denmark-Norway. It was called the Eider Canal, which used stretches of the Eider River for the link between the two seas. Completed during the reign of Christian VII of Denmark in 1784, the Eiderkanal was a 43-kilometre (27 mi) part of a 175-kilometre (109 mi) waterway from Kiel to the Eider River's mouth at Tönning on the west coast. It was only 29 metres (95 ft) wide with a depth of 3 metres (10 ft), which limited the vessels that could use the canal to 300 tonnes.After 1864 Second Schleswig War put Schleswig-Holstein under the government of Prussia (from 1871 the German Empire), a new canal was sought by merchants and by the German navy, which wanted to link its bases in the Baltic and the North Sea without the need to sail around Denmark.After World War I, the Treaty of Versailles required the canal to be open to vessels of commerce and of war of any nation at peace with Germany, while leaving it under German administration.(The United States opposed this proposal to avoid setting a precedent for similar concessions on the Panama Canal. The government under Adolf Hitler repudiated its international status in 1936, but the canal was reopened to all traffic after World War II. In 1948, the current name was adopted.‎
