Les Bushmen/Xam étaient un peuple de chasseurs-cueilleurs qui vivaient depuis près de cinq mille ans en Afrique du Sud, dans l'actuelle province du Cap. Dès le début du XXe siècle, ils avaient complètement disparu, exterminés à la longue par la colonisation européenne. Dasn les années 1860, le grand linguiste allemand W.H. Bleek, conscient du génocide en cours, prit à son service trois Bushmen/Xam, condamnés aux travaux forcés, et entreprit avec eux de sauver ce qui pouvait encore l'être de leur langue et de leur patrimoine oral. Ce n'est pas sans une grande émotion et un infini respect que Stephen Watson, poète sud-africain contemporain, a décidé de redonner vie à quelques-uns de ces textes d'une beauté fulgurante.
