‎Op naam van Augustinus (354-430) bestaat een kort traktaat over Latijnse grammatica. Inclusief rijtjes, indelingen en voorbeelden. Recent is aangetoond dat dit leerboek in hoofdzaak echt van Augustinus' hand is. Dat blijkt uit een aantal idee n over taal, woordelijke parallellen, en typisch Noord- Afrikaanse details. Het boek dateert uit de jaren voor Augustinus' doop in 387. Het is bedoeld als een opstapje voor spirituele studies en als een naslagwerk voor Afrikaanse Latijn-schrijvers. Sympathiek is dat de kerkvader steeds pleit voor traditie en goed gebruik, meer dan voor strikte toepassing van regeltjes. Veel rijtjes klinken vertrouwd, maar er zijn ook opmerkelijke verschillen. Zo is de verdeling van de nomina niet volgens 'declinaties' maar volgens 'grammaticaal geslacht'. Zoals steeds blijkt ook hier Augustinus' zorg voor de taal en zijn scherpe, analytische geest. Aanbevolen voor iedereen die op school Latijn heeft gehad!‎
