Maarten van Heemskerck (1498-1574) is one of the most important northern-Netherlandish artists of the sixteenth century. His earliest paintings already testify to his masterful creativity and originality and a period spent in Rome in 1532-1536/1537 would define his further career. The antique art and masterpieces of Italian artists like Michelangelo and Raphael that he saw there made a deep impression on him, fuelling a radical change in his style and themes. Having returned to Haarlem in 1537, Heemskerck developed into a leading proponent of the Renaissance in the northern Netherlands. The painter lived in turbulent times. Iconoclastic rioting and the revolt against Spanish rule put an end to traditional art for churches and monasteries in the northern Netherlands, while the wealthy bourgeoisie emerged as a new target group. Thanks to Heemskerck, printmaking also flourished as a new artistic medium capable of reaching broader swathes of the population. This book is the first to describe Heemskerck?s life and work in relation to one another against the backdrop of changing social conditions and sweeping historical events. Maarten van Heemskerck (1498-1574) is een van de belangrijkste Noord-Nederlandse kunstenaars van de zestiende eeuw. Zijn vroegste schilderijen getuigen al van zijn meesterlijke creativiteit en originaliteit, en een verblijf in Rome in de periode 1532-1536/1537 zou bepalend zijn voor zijn verdere loopbaan. De antieke kunst en meesterwerken van Italiaanse kunstenaars als Michelangelo en Rafa l die hij daar zag, maakten diepe indruk op hem en zorgden voor een radicale verandering in zijn stijl en thema?s. Na zijn terugkeer in Haarlem in 1537 ontwikkelde Heemskerck zich tot een vooraanstaand vertegenwoordiger van de renaissance in de Noord-Nederlanden. De schilder leefde in turbulente tijden. Beeldenstormen en de opstand tegen de Spaanse overheersing maakten een einde aan de traditionele kunst voor kerken en kloosters in de Noordelijke Nederlanden, terwijl de welgestelde burgerij opkwam als een nieuwe doelgroep. Dankzij Heemskerck bloeide ook de prentkunst op als een nieuw artistiek medium dat in staat was een breder publiek te bereiken. The collection of drawings Teyler's Museum has a widely known international reputation. This book is part of a series in which previously books were published on Italian drawings of the 15th and 16th century, and on Dutch drawings dating from 1575-1630 and 1740-1800. This book describes the 257 Netherlandish drawings by artists born before 1581. The most important group consists of no fewer than 125 sheets by Hendrick Goltzius; nowhere else in the world there are so many of his drawings.
