Carl De Keyzer pose un regard contemporain sur une centaine de photographies, pour la plupart inédites, datant de la Première Guerre mondiale. En compagnie de David Van Reybrouck, il a sélectionné des négatifs sur plaques de verre glanés dans le monde entier. Des images fortes, surprenantes, qui montrent autre chose que les clichés de boue, de cratères de bombes et de cadavres de chevaux. Il les a numérisés et restaurés de façon à obtenir des tirages aussi fidèles que possible. Le livre expose ainsi, en grand format - pour la première fois -, des photographies poignantes du front occidental, notamment des images aux couleurs étonnantes. Le résultat impressionne par son actualité. Grâce à ces agrandissements, des détails qui n'étaient pas censés être révélés apparaissent au grand jour. De son côté, David Van Reybrouck propose, dans un texte interpellant, sa lecture de ces photographies et de la Grande Guerre. Il invite à commémorer 14-18 autrement et à se « réapproprier » ce conflit, loin de l'industrie du souvenir qui occulte les problèmes actuels. Il met ainsi en lumière le décalage qui existe entre les célébrations de la Grande Guerre et de ses jeunes victimes tombées au front, et le tabou qui pèse aujourd'hui autour du phénomène - alarmant - du suicide chez les jeunes. Une invitation à observer ces images, et les émotions qu'elles suscitent, en regard de notre époque.
