‎Hoewel kunstenaar Werner Mannaers (?°1954) al zo'n dertig jaar actief is als schilder en tekenaar bleef de interesse van de kunstwereld tot voor kort grotendeels achterwege. Met enkele schitterende publicaties en tentoonstellingen komt daar nu in een rotvaart verandering in. Als postmodern schilder weigert hij consequent in een vakje gestopt te worden. Mannaers is bovendien het typevoorbeeld van de kunstenaar waar zijn en leven voelbaar worden in elke vezel van het canvas of papier. Als in een dagboek verwerkt hij de emoties en tribulaties van de dag in zijn tekeningen. Uitgediept en uitgepuurd vinden die dan een weg in zijn schilderijen. ‎The art in Flanders from 1985 to 1995. Its starting point is Artefactum magazine, which presented a defining image of the local art of that period, and the project focuses on both the art produced and the art criticism. The purchasing policy pursued by the then newborn M HKA is also examined, revealing that the magazine played an important part in it. Having previously turned the spotlight on the ICC, the museum is hereby once again looking at a period in its own history. The decade from the mid-80s to the mid-90s was one of hope and vigour in the visual arts in Flanders. It was characterised by increasing internationalisation and growing self-confidence, but also by the expanding influence of the market. The market became the main means of gaining interest, and the art of that time was perfectly suited to this. After the explosive painting of Die Neue Wilden and Transavantguardia, this was now the heyday of sculpture, with its vivid, clearly delineated works. Artefactum magazine was a perfect reflection of that period. It was glossy, eager in its international aspirations, and was the first in Belgium to introduce the extravagant adverts that have come to be part of any successful international art periodical. It balanced text with large, attractive illustrations, and its aim was to present the latest art to a broad readership of art-lovers and buyers. Its 53 issues, which looked at the work of more than 1500 artists, enabled Artefactum to offer a realistic picture of a key period that signalled a new start in the internationalisation of art in Flanders.‎

‎Peter Paul Rubens and Jan Brueghel the Elder were collaborating as painters as early as c. 1598, before Rubens's stay in Italy, but the most important period of their alliance spans from 1609 to 1621. After the death of Jan Brueghel the Elder in 1625, his son Jan the Younger continued the partnership with Rubens until the latter's death in 1640. The collaborative oeuvre of Rubens and Brueghel can be roughly divided into three groups: Madonnas in garlands of flowers, interiors with allegories, and landscapes with mythological and religious themes. Following his Italian sojourn and after his appointment as court painter to the Archdukes Albert and Isabella in 1609, Rubens also developed artistic relationships with other colleagues including Paul Bril and Frans Snyders. Works in collaboration with Brueghel from this period include the beautiful Mars Disarmed by Venus (Los Angeles, J. Paul Getty Museum), the Garden of Eden (The Hague, Mauritshuis) and the Louvre Madonna, made for Cardinal Federico Borromeo. The culmination of the two men's creative relationship is the five-part series of the Allegories of the Senses of 1617-1618 (Madrid, Prado), which lies at the heart of the present volume. The cycle depicts the Five Senses against a backdrop of princely splendour and is an extraordinary feat both artistically and in terms of its iconography. During the twenties Brueghel and Rubens co-produced multiple landscapes with history scenes, mainly in response to the demand for such works from a growing regular clientele. Diana?s Departure for the Hunt and Sleeping Diana and Nymphs (Paris, Musee de la Chasse et de la Nature) are fine examples. Although Rubens maintained lifelong working partnerships with other artists, the works he produced in conjunction with Brueghel form a special group, reflecting the personal friendship that existed between the two men. The author is curator of Old Masters at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. She has been working on the subject of collaborations between Rubens and Brueghel for several years.‎
