‎This interdisciplinary volume is a unique combination of the history of early modern emotions and art history, bringing together case studies which provide us with new insights on early modern artists and their emotional lives, often based on archival and literary sources. The history of emotions has gained more and more scholarly attention, evidenced by an ?affective turn? or ?emotional turn? in historical research. Many publications have appeared, and internationally oriented research centres and conferences have been set up and organized. This volume brings the importance of a clear understanding of historical feelings into the research area of art historians. Even though the depiction of emotions is an important discipline in its own right, in this volume the concept of the artist and his or her own personal feelings, often in connection with the creation of a work of art, is prioritised. Although it is argued that a painter had to be able to feel emotions in order to depict them correctly, the articles brought together in this volume focus primarily on the traces of artist?s emotions (?feelings?) that can be derived from archival documents, secondary sources, and paintings (?facts?). Each author has tried in his or her own way to elucidate both the written and visual expressions of an artist?s (personal) emotions. Hannelore Magnus is a full-time PhD. fellow of the Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO) at the same Research Unit of KU Leuven. She prepares a doctoral dissertation on fashion, dance and courting in the oeuvre of the Antwerp genre painter Hieronymus Janssens (1624-1693). Katlijne Van der Stighelen is full professor Early Modern Art History at KU Leuven. ‎ In de zomer van 2018 organiseert het MAS in Antwerpen in samenwerking met het Rubenshuis een eerste monografische tentoonstelling over de vergeten kunstenares Michaelina Wautier (1614-1689). Ze werd geboren in Mons maar bouwde haar loopbaan uit in Brussel waar ze rond 1650 actief was. De kunstenares onderhield contacten met het hof van aartshertog Leopold-Wilhelm die vier van haar werken in zijn collectie had. Van haar hand zijn een dertigtal schilderijen en een tekening bekend. Meer dan een derde hiervan is voluit gesigneerd en gedateerd. Michaelina schilderde meesterlijke historiestukken, indringende portretten, ontwapenende genretaferelen en verstilde bloemstukken. Haar veelzijdigheid is zonder meer grensverleggend te noemen. Typisch voor haar oeuvre is de uitdagende thematiek, de virtuoze techniek en het grote formaat. Alle werken zijn ontstaan tussen 1643 en 1659. Haar meesterstuk is ongetwijfeld de De triomf van Bacchus in het Kunsthistorisches Museum in Wenen (doek, 270 x 354 cm, afb. 1). Michaelina Wautier verschijnt hier als een halfnaakte bacchante en kijkt als enige van de aanwezige figuren naar de toeschouwer. Meer dan tien levensgrote figuren trekken in een stoet voorbij. De manier waarop ze de mannelijke naakten heeft weergegeven, laat zien dat ze de kans kreeg om modellen naar het leven te tekenen, uniek voor vrouwen met artistieke ambitie in de vroegmoderne tijd. Een portrait historie met de heilige Agnes en de heilige Dorothea (afb. 2) is nu al een publiekslieveling geworden. Twee blozende meisjes poseren als twee jonge martelaressen in een intieme ruimte. Ze kijken niet naar elkaar maar zijn in gedachten verzonken en communiceren ongezien. Het portret dat ze schilderde van de Italiaanse jezuiet Martino Martini heeft haar reputatie pas goed gevestigd (afb. 3). Het is een imposante figuur die in Chinees kostuum poseert en die voor wat het koloriet en de brede toets betreft aan Venetiaanse voorbeelden doet denken.irolamo) ‎

‎This book, one of four devoted to Rubens's portraiture, contains a catalogue of all the portraits of unidentified individuals attributed by Ludwig Burchard or by the authors to Rubens and executed in Antwerp. The volume thus complements the catalogue of all the portraits of known persons painted by Rubens in Antwerp, published in the Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard as Part XIX.2 in 1987. A decade earlier the volume on the portraits painted by Rubens outside Antwerp (XIX.1) had inaugurated the series on Ruben's portraits. In 2016, the book dealing with Portraits after Existing Prototypes (XIX.4) also appeared, so that now the cataloguing of Rubens?s entire oeuvre in the field of portraiture is complete. Not all the works discussed in the present book (XIX.3) are, however, portraits of unidentified sitters ? initially the volumes title. Recent scholarly research has not only allowed insights into sitters previously unrecognised, but has indeed made it possible to give an identity to a number of persons portrayed in works that were not included in the second volume (XIX.2).
